Computer Cops
Please forgive me for being somewhat lackadaisical at the moment. If I had some energy I'd read the various websites, but I'm recovering from 4 hours a sleep per night for three weeks. Last night I got more than 8 hours, so I'm somewhat groggy.

Computer Cops, is hosted by Aletia.com. I recently upgraded to their business package, so I'm paying about $30 US per month. And the site has been down for two long days this pass week. I'm more than slightly annoyed.

My ideal requirements:

  • > 99% uptime
  • > 350 MB disk space (files and database)
  • > 20 GB transfer per month
  • System redundancies
  • Quality customer care
  • Linux/Unix Platform
  • PHP/Perl/MySQL
  • Apache: mod_gzip, mod_perl, mod_php, mod_jk

  • A true shell prompt via SSH, no shell fakes!
  • Redundant/multiple OC3 connections
  • Full private cgi-bin
  • .htaccess
  • Unlimited domain parking
  • Dedicated static IPs
  • POP3 & alias/forwarding emails
  • Email autoresponders
  • Mailman mailing lists
  • SSL (Thawte)
  • Traffic tools like webalizer

And since I'm basically tired right now, that's the gist of what I'm looking for. Most importantly... stated again:

    Quality customer care

    Ideally reachable by phone.

Give this site a try.http://www.webhostingratings.com/Great place to search for a new web host.99% is horrible. That's nearly 4 days of down time per year. You want 99.9% or as close as you can get to that.Good luck,Jim

For that price, what you are getting is a steal! Look around for a comparable match with regards to performance. You won't find it. You will be responsible for maintaining the server's security. That shouldn't be a problem for you I don't suppose. I can't believe you get the P4 1.8GHz all to yourself. It must be shared. Call and get the details. A gig of RAM! The only thing missing is unmetered bandwidth, but what are you going to do. Still, an incredible bargain. You can probably get a portion of your money back as you could offer hosting services to members that currently have, or are looking for, that type of service. While they make it sound easy to operate your own virtual server, it will take some work and knowledge that I am confident you already possess. That and the cost are the only show stoppers as I see it. The possibilties are nearly endless. The price is amazing. Really.I'd also ask them about speed issues. What do they use? All that with dial-up transfer rates during peak times would explain the low cost. Any sites that use this package listed to check? It would be interesting to see how the performance is. Maybe a large file transfer, or a streaming media to verify the performance? I guess there is a money-back guarantee if things don't work out.

Well if you can afford it .. a dedicated server is the way to go. I am hosting about twenty servers at Rackspace and network uptime was 100% last year. The support rocks and have had no problems ever. I guess you get what you pay for.

I strongly suggest you try Pair. They host several non-profits I've assisted, have a 99.9+% uptime, have a rapid response to customer service issues, and are knowledgeable:http://pair.com/pair/compare/Everything you asked for and more for $30/mo in their webmaster package. If you prepay for a year you get an 8% discount. If you meet their criteria of non-profit (as I do) you qualify for additional discounts. Why a webhost at all?I currently host a low traffic (1 - 1.5 gb/day) site off a 333 mhz/512 mb RAM machine sitting next to me in my home office. It's on a 256kbps upstream/128kbps downstream commercial cable connection. I rely on my site for a portion of my income, so I don't generally take hosting issues lightly, and I've never seen of or heard of a host that could provide better customer service or uptime than I can for myself. As long as you're not transferring large bin files or trying to stream multimedia, you can easily handle up to 20,000 hits a day (averaging 100k per page under Nuke, which is my average for my Nuke site) with a 256kbps upstream. Downstream for hosting is meaningless.I pay 70 bucks a month for my commercial cable account (another 45 for my normal residential account with uncapped downstream). I maintain full control of all equipment, my cable provider provides limited revenue loss protection in the event downtime on their end, and I have local access to all hardware and software.20 gigs isn't that much. The 30 to 45 gigs a month that I use isn't that much. Until you get into heavy bandwidth requirements, you're best bet is to host from home using a commercial cable/sdsl account (or a combination of them for redundancy). By a couple UPS systems, build a decent server with a hot-swap RAID array, hot-swap redundant power supplies (and maybe even hot-swap memory if you want to get fancy), and you've got a good hosting system. You can always turn around and host other people's domains for 20 bucks or so. My cable costs are covered by hosting a half dozen domains that are basically no-traffic sites. And I serve my high-traffic site at no cost (more or less).Anyways, the point is... if you want something done right, you do it yourself. I'd never put my money into the hands of someone else. And when you host revenue generating websites with third parties, that's exactly what you're doing.Amber Y.#xxxcite Wired!
