image spam: Busted!: Beware C I Host Inc Email Spamming image
SPAM
Computer Cops used to reside with C I Host on a dedicated server and the service we received was spotty at best. In fact we tried to terminate our account with them but C I Host didn't believe in customer satisfaction. On April 20, 2004 I received an email from "C I Host, Sales" [email protected] with subject: "C I Host Wants You Back!" Well, you can imagine my reply. Leaving out a few choice words, my express request to be removed from the SPAM list was included:

Furthermore, please remove me immediately from any future SPAM mailings or I will have to report CI Host as a SPAM site.
Lo-and-behold the SPAM monger got me again yesterday, June 3, 2004 with the same subject and From address. And yes, I checked the headers, they came straight from CIHost servers.

The following is the email header for the first email back on Apr 20 (I included the hyperlinks):
Return-Path: <[email protected]>
Received: from cassiopeia.propagation.net (cassiopeia.propagation.net [63.249.159.1])

And here of course is the first email SPAM they sent me:

Dear Paul Laudanski:

I gave them my single reply back with due warning. They didn't follow it because here is proof of their second SPAM to me:

Not much of a difference eh? So I replied back with a nasty gram. And this time, I'm going to send the emails, along with links back to here, to SPAM blacklists. At this point, its time to pull out the SPAM laws at the Federal and State levels to see if any recourse can be taken.

CAN-SPAM Act of 2003

It just might fall under that particular SPAM LAW as seen in this summary:

The Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act requires unsolicited commercial e-mail messages to be labeled (though not by a standard method) and to include opt-out instructions and the sender's physical address.
Clearly no opt-out was provided.

One time I can understand, maybe even a second time. If I'm feeling good a third too... but in this case, no opt-out information was made available. It seems to me CIHost broke the Federal Law on SPAM.

Report the buggers, Paul. Turn 'em in; they deserve whatever the law can throw at them!

I have alerted some anti-spam agencies as well as contacted Qwest. The cidr-report shows CIHost is adjacent to some of Qwest's routers. A traceroute revealed that to be correct, so I'm hoping Qwest is an upstream circuit provider to CIHost.

Seems they also outsource someone to send out spam and to gather emails however they can. Clearly the person who wrote that email isn't a native English speaker.

There is no doubt they spam old customers who have moved on, and customers that have never been theirs.
They'll do it in about any way that they can, and so many are in the dark about this, but yet they are still gaining clientele.
