I am paranoid about open ports on my machine, and knowing that port 110 is open full time worries me. Would it be possible to have Benign start-up only when I open my e-mail programme, and not when Windows starts-up?

Does your firewall open ports when the application fires up? Normally whether B9 is open or not doesn't affect whether your firewall has port 110 open.
Try using some of the CCSP tools to see what an external system is able to see open under different conditions, in this case both when B9 hasn't been started and when it has been started.

You can test this for yourself at www.grc.com. Go to Shields Up test and choose All Service Ports to double check the status of your ports.
I have Benign running constantly and Port 110 is in true stealth mode for me - running XP Pro inbuilt firewall only. |

Hhmmm, it seems that the CCSP Port Scan tools aren\'t working. Gibson's site (referenced by sighthound) is a great alternative.

Thank for the replies.
I do use GRC for the check, and it shows port 110 as open. I am also using Zone Alarm Pro set to High for Internet security.
I see in the write-up for B9 that it responds to a probe on port 110 but refuses to accept it, this must be why it fails at GRC. That is not stealth because the response reveals that the machine is there.
Any suggestions?

Does the port scan result change depending whether B9 is running?

Yes it does. I have just tried it with b9 not running, and 110 is in stealth.

OK! It was my stupidy I think. I removed server rights from b9 in Zapro, and now GRC can't find port 110.
Thanks for the help.
