Go to http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html , and download Hijack This.
Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the Temp folder, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".
When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please show us its contents.
Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

great stuff. I'm on a different machine just now but will fire up my little laptop shortly and follow the instructions. By mistake I'd also posted same question in another forum but will notify the person who answered me also, that I'll work it out in this one.
As I'm due to deploy to Iraq very soon, was really concerned I'd be living with that mess for some time. Thanks very much. Bill |

Reboot, and delete the C:\Windows\Svchost.exe file.
The file could possibly have the "Hidden" attribute. Here's how to show hidden and operating system files
And you're running an outdated and therefore unsafe version of Internet Explorer.
You NEED to upgrade to IE 6.0 SP1 (Make sure you get the correct language version for your operating system! ).
Next, go to the Windows Update site, and download and install ALL Critical Updates on offer.
That will fix innumerable bugs, update a large number of important system files, and plug many security holes.
Good luck,
