You mean there is no such thing as Project Echelon or Sonobouys?

No such thing as Echelon as described by the myriad of enthusiasts who require some "dark force" to make life a bit more interesting than it is without such fantasies.

Reminds me of those who are bent on claiming there never was a trip to the moon... there's a whole bunch of sites out there to prove the conspiracy...

To each his own shtik.

Eugene Meyer had a vision of what makes a newspaper truly great, and that vision included serving the public according to seven principles. He offered them in a speech on March 5, 1935 and published them on his newspaper's front page.

The first mission of a newspaper is to tell the truth as nearly as the truth can be ascertained. Eugene Meyer

1. The newspaper shall tell ALL the truth so far as it can learn it, concerning the important affairs of America and the world.
2. As a disseminator of news, the paper shall observe the decencies that are obligatory upon a private gentleman.
3. What it prints shall be fit reading for the young as well as the old.
4. The newspaper's duty is to its readers and to the public at large, and not to the private interests of its owners.
5. In the pursuit of truth, the newspaper shall be prepared to make sacrifices of its material fortunes, if such a course be necessary for the public good.
6. The newspaper shall not be the ally of any special interest, but shall be fair and free and wholesome in its outlook on public affairs and public men.

It is highly unlikely that Echelon is monitoring everyone everywhere, as critics claim. It would be impossible for the NSA to capture all communications.... Listening in on European business to help American corporations would be a very low priority, and passing secret intercepts to companies would quickly be discovered.

James Bamford, Washington Post

This is a quote from one of the sources you referred me to.

My point, as in my innitial statement above, is not that Echelon does not exist, but that it is not the omniscient force that people like to think it is. People love to imagine conspiracies, it gives them something to be pissed and indignant about.

Just in terms of speech recognition technology, we have a heck of a time getting computer phone operators to understand two word phrases such as "London, England"... and you think Echelon has the technology to sift through 100's of millions of cellphone conversations per day in some 25 (let's be conservative) languages for key words that malicious evil doers are going to be using candidly over their phone lines without worrying about their phones being tapped.... you're dreaming Laughing

I have a particular peeve for those who go on about how just saying "Echelon", or "Osama" over the phone or on the Net gets you flagged... heck after this post I'm sure to have the men from the matrix following me to work tomorrow morning. Shocked

Here's some more of what I'm saying, again quoted from the references you supplied:

Quote:
Hints and speculations about the true nature and capabilities of these "all ears" spacecraft have reached folkloric proportions.

In the United States, not surprisingly, officials are mum on whether Echelon even exists.

Echelon is very real, explains Jeffrey Richelson, a senior fellow with the National Security Archive in Washington, D.C. He has pointed out that some of the oratory concerning Echelon and its abilities may be "over-the-top." But the fact that a U.S.-promoted effort to operate an electronic eavesdropping network with global reach "should come as no surprise," he explains.

Similarly sanguine is Richard Best, Jr., a specialist in national defense at the Congressional Research Service (CRS), in the Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Trade Division. The CRS is a research arm of the U.S. Congress. "There has been a capability for many years to listen for specific words, to filter them out. But in terms of listening to every conversation or every email throughout the world, that's just wild speculation," Best told SPACE.com.

But if such an intelligence-hungry system like Echelon is real, why was there no warning from its operators that a massive attack on home soil was imminent? [referring to 9/11] Given 20/20 hindsight, Best said, one could go back and perhaps see a pattern. "People for whatever reason didn't see the pattern at the time. Whether in retrospect they should have, or whether there was no reasonable expectation that they could have…that's the question and I'm not going to sit here and speculate on that," he said.

we are talking about something that is a far cry from the sci fi version of echelon that the beginning of this string was adopting... admit it.

Oh well, then we agree. It is not an omniscient force, that just requires a lot more computer power than anyone has available. I thought you were merely refusing to believe that it even exists. People think that it is like the movie "Enemy of the State." I think any government would only wish it was that good.

Hi G-Spot,
I read your first post last night and knew exactly what you meant in those few words. Cool It is nice to meet you. Jamming is also very well informed. It is not what you read..but rather what you know..and it is interesting the myths that are out there

I could never figure out myself why the aliens brought those abductees back to the Big Blue Marble...but then about 7 years ago my counterpart on Uranus told me that every life forum out there has a sense of humor and he gets a commission for every tee shirt sold.

Go figure Wink

Woody, you are actually a big hit out there in their equivalent of TV Shows. For you see they have bagged and then tagged you with a transmitter and have been retailing your daily life story on their equivalent of a Pay Per View Channel. I hope you keep their ratings up or they detonate the little transceiver and you have a aneurysm. Then they syndicate your adventures, after news of your demise. Keep those ratings high! Wink

Mariner,
Can you tell me about such an event... how was Echelon triggered and what happened?

If you fart into a microphone will it cause an event..or just move you up to a higher Echelon ?

I will be testing that out after my Christmas Prime Beef Rib Roast and Yorkshire Pudding and I want to make sure I have enough Key Lime Pie left over when all y'all show up with your own sniffers. Laughing
