I was born an American; I live an American; I shall die an American!
- Daniel Webster
Servare cives, major est virtus patriae patri.
- Lucius Annaeus Seneca
I am not a citizen of Earth, Earth does nothing to protect my rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, those are guaranteed by the nation which I am a Citizen of and its Constitution. Those powers are derived from the assent of the people it governs. If I act against the safety of that nation (and thereby its people) by providing aid and comfort to the enemies of it, then I am no longer acting as a Citizen of that nation, and no longer protected by its Laws and Constitution, except for those rights it gives me. Civil Disobedience is not exempt from the consequences of that Civil Disobedience, but only when one accepts those consequences is an individual truly free to act on their conscience. Dr. King and the Mahatma did not refuse to accept the consequences of their choices but embraced them as Thoreau stated. Anything less than that standard is the act of a Moral Coward and unworthy of consideration. |

I not only believe it, in some ways i am comforted by it. I fear the possible lack of checks and balances in such secretive organizations and the all too human potentials for abuse, unnecessary abuse. It is a scary violent world though: too much technology in too many immature hands, an unnavoidable occurance with the freedom democracy encourage; thus the necessesities of such organizations.
That said is the invention of the unbreakable codemaker quantum computer a good thing? |
