Hello there,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a reccurring and extremely irritating problem I seem to be having. But, it needs to be in a language I can understand, as I'm no computer or software expert, just a simple user.

Well, over the last two weeks or so, i have been having problems entering yahoo groups. What seems to happen, is I get disconnected (I'm on dial-up so it happens frequently), then on logging back into the Internet, I am completely unable to access any yahoo group. Instead, I get a number 999 page 'This page is currently unavailable'. However, this only seems to happen with groups, not my yahoo email, Messenger, or any other section of yahoo. I have checked with friends who live in a similar location to me and they have not had the same problem, it is limited to 'my' computer. I am then unable to access groups for a long period of time, then all of a sudden and for no apparent reason, I can suddenly get into them all. I have been using groups for a very long time, and have never experienced this problem until now.

What has changed over the past couple of weeks, is I've downloaded a couple of anti-spyware programs. These are SpywareGuard, MRU-Blaster and Spyware-Blaster. I am no expert with these, I just wanted protection from all the adware out there. So, what I wanted to know, is there some specific adware from yahoo groups that I need to allow, or something else that this software may be blocking that I need to change? I had a problem entering chat rooms in these groups and found my ActiveX controls had been changed, so I changed them back. That allowed me to enter chat, but has not solved my overall groups problem. Since I actually own a group, Moderate another, and am a member of many more, this is a major problem. Can anyone help, as I haven't got a clue?

I've not seen this.
Have you tried clearing your cache and cookies?
If you are using IE clear it several times.

Hi there,

Actually, clearing my cookies and temporary Internet files is something I've always done on a regular basis and I have neither increased nor decreased the amount of times I do so. *S*, the mystery continues. In fact, as I'm writing this I'm unable to access groups. Basically, I'm having to go by process of elimination. I actually had a friend who downloaded these anti-spyware programs and as a result, was suddenly unable to to use his Kazaa. This was changed when he reset the settings on these programs to allow the specific kinds of spyware incorporated in Kazaa. Therefore, that was the line I was thinking of in regards to yahoo groups. Is it some sort of specific spyware, cookies (excepting those cookies that are specifically called 'yahoo' cookies) or Java script from yahoo that I need to allow? Unfortunately, if yahoo groups does indeed require that you accept some of these things, I have no idea at all what ones exactly they are. At the same time, I could be barking up the wrong tree completely. I'm not shining so brightly at the moment *S*.

Try bypassing Proxo and see what happens after you clear your cache .

The Kazaa problem I understand. I believe there are ways around it, kazaa-lite?, but I don't use kazaa. I don't see this affecting a Groups logon, but I don't use these programs so I can't be certain.

I have spybot S&D and I use Proxomitron to handle some things. I haven't had any problems with groups but I only read.

So you sign out of the Yahoo you can access, Close IE, Open IE, Clear the cache and cookies, Go to the Groups logon page, Enter your info, Get 'This page is currently unavailable', and you know it is?

Somewhere there was a "sign out of all Yahoo" button. I wonder if that would help.

"Bypass Proxo" is a good idea too. Just see if you can login. You could have a filter problem.

Hi Happy Shiner,
I've been having the same problem. I get a "999" message that reads:

This page is currently unavailable
Unfortunately, we are unable to process your request at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please try again later. (return to Yahoo)

This appears to be a problem with Yahoo groups, but I've not been able to get anyone to check at the same time I'm having the problem. In the back of my head, I wondered if it might be something going on with my computer. But since the problem is very intermittent, I doubt it's my system. For example, I was checking several groups this morning, then, suddenly, when I moved to the next post, I got the error. The problem usually goes away within an hour. It's been happening several times a week for the last month or so.

I've written Yahoo three times about this, but by the time they check and respond to my message, the problem is gone. So they simply report that everything appears to be fine.

The problem doesn't appear related to a specific group, because I get the same message when I navigate to the Yahoo Groups home page.

Just to be sure, would you please respond to this message when you have the problem again (make sure you check the "Notify me when a reply is posted" option). If I we happen to be online at the same time (I check my mail frequently), we can see if we both have the problem at the same time. If so, then that would rule out any issues with our respective computers.

Thanks,
David

Mad You guys are not alone.

I run several lists at yahoo and I am having the same problem.
I can work on my lists in yahoogroups for about 10 minutes and then it kicks me off with that darn page not available, and I have to wait about an hour to get back on and start this all over again.
This has been going on for several weeks.
I emailed yahoo yesterday and I hope to have an answer Monday.
This is driving me nuts, but I am glad to know it is not just me.

Will let all of you know what I hear from them. [/b]

Hi Blueshado,
Since posting my previous message, I discovered I can change browsers and get in. I use ie6.0.28 as my primary browser. The couple of times I've had the problem, I contacted a friend to try to access Yahoo groups at the same time... in both cases, they were able to get in, while I was not.

Today, I got the "page not available, we are unable to process your request" message around mid-day and decided to try AOL. Presto, I got in (I do not use AOL as my ISP, only for email). Just to make sure the problem had not cleared up on its own, I went back to ie6 and still could not get in. In fact, it was two hours later before I was finally able to get in with ie6. This is so odd since AOL browser is based on IE (although I'm using an old version of AOL - 7.0)

Blueshado, what browser do you use??

I've already given up on Yahoo. Every time I write them, they respond back with "everything is ok on our end, let us know if you continue to have a problem"... Only thing is, they don't do ANYTHING if you continue to have problem. I've written three times now, using original problem reference number.

Hi,

Thanks!!

I as well use IE 6.

Do you have the same problem as far as you can be in yahoogroups for a while and then get kicked off with that page unavailable?

Thanks for letting me know about your problem and possibly being IE6 causing it for some very odd reason.
I will try seeing if I can do what you did and see if it changes things.
Thanks again!!

I had the same problem a few weeks ago and again today... so I started doing some troubleshooting to figure out what was causing it. I realized that the problem occured usually after I've cleared my cache/cookies.

I wanted to see if the problem was with Yahoo, my computer, or with Internet Explorer, so I tried logging into my Yahoo mail from a different computer (running the same version of IE) and I was able to successfully login to my email. This eliminated Yahoo as the cause of the problem. So the problem had to be with my computer or with my browers.

Since a few other people have submitted posts that said they were able to login with other browsers such as AOL, I figured that it must have been a setting with Internet Explorer that was causing the problem.
Sure enough, I checked my Internet Options and tried removing the checkmark next to "Automatically Detect Settings" and once I did that, my Yahoo was working fine again.

Something must happen when you clear your cache that prohibits your browser from detecting the settings required for logging into Yahoo. For those of you who are not familar with your "Internet Options", follow these steps:

In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" at the top of the screen.
Then select "Internet Options"
Select the "Connections" tab
Click on the "LAN Settings" button
Uncheck "Automatically Detect Settings" -- (if it is already unchecked, try checking it).
Click "Ok"
Click "Ok" again.

Now try logging into Yahoo and see if it works. You might need to close and reopen your browser if having problems signing-in.
Once you've successfully logged in, go back & put a checkmark back in "Automatically Detect Settings".
Remember these steps incase the problem should occur again in the future

I hope this helps fix your Yahoo problems.

Nope. I just ran into the problem today.

I was using Mozilla FireFox 0.8 with no automatic detection of connection settings (win2k). I was logged into Yahoo Mail (using the https logon screen - I wish they'd fix their certificate) working through my mail. Went to MyYahoo fine.

Tried to go to groups.yahoo.com and got the 999.

Tried to go to a specific group directly - same problem.

Tried to go to a specific message in a group - same problem.

Tried to get there with IE 6 (with and without auto connection detect checked) - same problem.

I can get as close as Groups Help home which, of course, is no help.

Mad Mad

I think you may be right that it has something to do with the cache or cookies - I recently cleared mine - but I can't think what it is looking for.

First, let me apologize - I googled my way here and posted the message above without trying to figure out what "Proxomitron" meant. Embarassed

Having said that, I got here because I was having the same problem getting to Yahoo Groups as the rest of you. It's not a Proxomitron problem - I hadn't heard of the program until just now and don't have it on my computer.

It doesn't appear to be a proxy related problem - I have a proxy set up manually for FTP but HTTP goes through straight.

It doesn't appear to be a blocking problem - FireFox blocks pop-ups and I have AdBlock installed which blocks specific URLs but my IE installation is clean and I'm not using a modified HOSTS file.

It doesn't appear to be a hijack problem - or if it is, it is something that AdAware, SpyBot, and HijackThis can't find.

Any other ideas?

I believe its yahoo's method of abuse prevention. If your usage is high, then it blocks you for an hour (or whatever time period it is). I came to this conclusion because:

I went the the groups site from another computer and it was fine, the instant I put in my account info, I got the error

Its my belieft that they are blocking not only your account, but also the site you used to access it from that caused the block, and any additional sites you try to login to during the block.

Just a theory, I was very busy on the site today, so it makes sense for my case, might not for yours though.

I just got the problem tonight and have been trying to search for a way around it. If I change my IP addy then I can get to groups.yahoo.com right away. It seems that if you check 150 messages then it will block you out. I don't know what the time limit is, but I used a program to check a group and after 1min it kicked me off. Then I changed IP's and limited it to 50msg/min. After 3 min it kicked me off. I'm going to try 140msg / 10min and see if it will let me do that.
