Thanks everyone. A quick visit to the Symantec website and I have managed to "stealth" 110.
This is the first time I have ever used a forum for problems over anything. I'm very impressed and appreciate the help....!!!!!!!!!!! |

I've now managed to configure my firewall properly!!!
Now I get "stealthed" results on port 110. I simply (after a good nights sleep!) went to Sygates web site and read the instructions. Hmmm... |
I'm also using Sygate Personal Firewall. Can you provide a link to the instructions that you used? Also, this sounds like a very good thing to add to the Benign FAQ.

I got it configured correctly now. I made the mistake of allowing B9 through the FW and then trying to put restrictions on top of it.
Now, I have B9 blocked, but an advanced property allows it to connect outgoing through port 110. |

I had an early open port glitch with Zone Alarm Pro ... but now it's ok. Just took some tweak time and suggestions from this fine group.

Just thought I'd point out that the local port (i.e. between e-mail client and B9) can be configured in in Benign now (Tools -> Options).
This is a recent feature release so people who haven't got the latest version of the software should probably head to http://www.firetrust.com/download/benign/ |

If you're using Sygate Personal Firewall v5.0, click Applications. Right click on B9 and select Block. Then click Advanced.
In the Advanced Application Configuration dialog box, enter your mail server's IP address. (Trusted IP addresses.)
In the remote server ports TCP, enter 110. Leave UDP blank. Check Act as Client.
In the local ports TCP, enter 110. Leave UDP blank. Check Act as Server.
OK your way out.

It turns out that I didn't configure things correctly after all.
True, I blocked port 110. But the above FW configuration breaks downloading of mail. I didn't realize this because when I set up the FW I'd also upgraded B9, and it didn't append the .B9 to the mail client's POP server address!
So I wasn't even using B9 for the last week.
Sorry about any confusion I might have caused. And I'm still interested in getting this to work.... |

I made the mistake of specifying the local port of 110. Leaving this blank allows B9 to download mail properly.
I feel like such a goof ball! |

Okkkk...just how does one configure NPF 2003 "correctly"?
I've got it set in the advanced controls to "slealth" ALL ports...however...running the Symantec online security scan with B9 running ALWAYS results in a 110 port being exposed.
Help PLEASE...the reponse I got from Symantec was kinda confusing....is it safe or not? their reply really didn't answer my question....see it for yourself at: http://www.computercops.biz/postp14598.html#14598 |

Wayward - Could you share what needs to be done in ZoneAlarmPro to shield port 110 and still run Benign?
Thanks

RBIsaacs,
Looks like someone has started a new thread concerning this issue. The comments there pretty much mirror my experience.
/postt4809.html
I'm now behind a hardware router/firewall, so my protection level has increased significantly. I've had to do less tweaking with Zone Alarm Pro.

RBIsaacs,
Oops. It now dawns on me that you started the new thread. Sorry, I must have dozed off for a minute.

Yup. It occured to me that while people in this thread kept saying thay had made tweaks to their firewall, nobody seemed interested in saying what they did. I thought a thread that addressed ZA4P might elicit something from someone more competent telling me if what I did was right or wrong, or if there was a better way to do this.
