I am having the same problem and also have no idea what to do. It also turns off my auto protect and emailing scan. Eventually after 30 minutes or so it goes into a physical dump mode and my computer has to be shut down.

I still have no idea why norton will not liveupdate. I have tried numerous things and i cannot figure out the problem. PLEASE ANYBODY HELP. I paid a lot for stupid Norton and i dont want to go out and buy another antivirus program. I still am unable to view syamtec's site and i believe that it must be some sort of a virus or a script found in the systems folder....Anyway if anybody could figure out the problem that would be great thanks.

Count me in. I can't access symatec.com sites from IE or Netscape. LiveUpdate can't find them either. And the system bogs down REAL bad, and starts giving low memory errors after 30 minutes or so. The two processes at fault in my case are "avserve.exe" and "avserve2.exe". I shut them down and the system dosn't lag. I REALLY need to get this thing fixed. My (less than computer savvy) employees need this system. I'm sick of getting called in the middle of the night to reboot a PC and close two processes Mad . Next attempt is to download the liveupdate reinstall from a different computer, and try to un-then-reinstall liveupdate. But if someone knows what's going on, please share!

Hi all,
If you're still having problems accessing Symantec's website, liveupdate, or other antivirus sites, check your Windows Hosts file (just do a search on your hard drive(s) for "hosts"). Open each of these files (there may be more than one) with notepad (right click on the file, select "open with", make sure you deselect "always use this program to open this program") scroll down and delete all entries in the Hosts file except for the line:
127.0.0.1 localhost

Save the changes you made, and you should be able to run liveupdate and access Symantec's website.

the Gaobot virus adds lines to the %system%\drivers\etc\hosts file so you can't access some websites.

-Hope this helps

JodisOperandi

Thank's for the info BUT!

when i done a search the only host files i could open with note pad were .dll files? then the parts i could read did not contain 127.0.0.1 localhost so i didnt delete anything!!

here is a list of the files i could open & read
FILE NAME______________________LOCATION

rdchost.dll________________________c:\windows\system32
upnphost.dll_______________________c:\windows\system32
rdchost.dlll________________________c:\servicepackfiles\i386
upnphost.dll_______________________c:\servicepackfiles\i386

now i know it's got to be 1 of these 4 files that's the problem!
do you know which 1 i should delete?

as what you have said makes all sence as it was the w32.Gaobot AFS virus my norton picked up!!

Hey Kit-Kat, don't dig around in there! Get this file...

http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/VB_Projec...Reader.exe

It is tiny, downloads in a second, run it and it will show you what's in your Hosts file. It also lets you reset it to default or you can edit it any way you like.

No.

The hosts file is just a list of substitute url's. It can be manipulated by hackers to force you to their websites when you think you're going somewhere else, e.g. you type in www.symantec.com but you end up on some site full of trojan and spyware loaders, redirectors, keystroke monitors, more bad stuff like that.

It is a good idea to keep the hosts file set to the default single entry and HostFileReader.exe is a simple way to do that. It also allows you to edit the file if you really want to and you can make backup copies, restore backups, find duplicates, delete them, etc.

Have you tried checking for spyware, adware, etc? Something is blocking Norton. Did you do the virus check that Norton offers before installing? Norton AV can be a bit flakey too - have you approached the Symantec support team for help?

There's lots of great stuff on the ComputerCops downloads pages to help you check your machine... http://computercops.biz/downloads.html
