Dear members,
I just checked out my business PC here in the shop (running NIS 2002) and I also have all the those "Firewall Configuration Rules updated" messages every .33 seconds when NIS 2002 status panel is opened or surfing the Internet with MSIE 6.
I also noticed "SYMIDS" showing with the imfamous yellow "!" in the device manager as repported by other users. The service shows "STOPPED". When you try to click "START", an error specifying that the device does not exist. Joseph Morris mentioned that it might have been replaced by "SYMIDSCO" and he is on the money because I now have the same "SYMDISCO" service on my machine.
I do not see any "slow down" however, my PC is an Intel 2.4GHz processor and things move so fast that I don't see the "slow down". On my other client's PCs, they use anything from Intel Pentium II 233MHz and AMD Durons which makes the "slow down" much much more apparent since May 12.
That's my input. |

Sonofjay over at BBR/DSLR read this and checked and found that this occurs when NMAIN.EXE is running (typically when you've got the NIS Current Status GUI open). Close the window, the updating quits (according to him) and the CPU usage goes back down to normal.

It now seems that, since the mid-May LiveUpdates you need both SYMIDS and SYMIDSCO installed and running. Of course, if you do a roll-back to pre-May 12 configuration, you only need SYMIDS.SYS/VXD .

Another interesting thing turned up over there as a temporary 'fix' -- disable "Privacy Control" and the slow-down problem seems to 'vanish'. We're making a leap of faith here and assuming that SYMIDSCO somehow is now handling the Privacy Control function and then tries to 'pass' to SYMIDS. Of course, if SYMIDS isn't there, . . . . that's when the CPU appears to start racing. (He's also put up Process Explorer activity graphs to illustrate this.
Hope this helps a bit.

Jvmorris, you da man!!!! I have NIS 2002 and I tried disabling the privacy control feature and sure enough my web browser flys again! This "is" indeed a temporary fix for the slowdowns after the May 12th update. You say SYMIDS "isn't there". Why is it not there? I did a file search on my PC and there is no sign of this file. Anyways thank you very much for the info. on disabling Privacy Control.

jvmorris,
I concur with HellBeNt that disabling the "Privacy Control" function ("Protection de la confidentialité" for those using the french version of NIS 2002) does indeed return the speed to the quasy-pre may 12 incident. I say this because some of my clients and not sure the system is as fast as it was. But it is indeed much more usable.

EVERYONE:
Apperently, "sonofjay" has found the real solution. Please read the following:
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,...~start=120
A file wiped-out by LiveUpdate is responsible. Win98 seams untested so far. I will try it out.

Have you got the symids.vxd file required for Win 9x/ME? That's the issue here. At the moment, I figure we're at least twelve hours away from Symantec posting it. And, given that a lot of NIS/NPF 2002 users are running Win 9x/ME, every minute counts.

Negatory; negatory Break away! That is not the file required for Win 9x/ME users who've downloaded LiveUpdates post-May 12 2004. This file (whatever it is and I do not recognize the build at all) cannot possibly be the file required for post-May 12 Win 9X/ME LiveUpdates to NIS/NPF 2002.
The Redirector Update that first incorporated symids did not even exist prior to early March 2004 under any circumstances. Prior to that symids hooked to a different part of NIS/NPF 2002.

I believe I have found another location to download the file direct from symantec. http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/en...Open&src=w
Go to step 1 and download scf_su6_5-04update.zip . Extract SNDCorpUpdater.msi from the zip then right click on sndcorpupdater.msi and choose to open the file with winrar. Inside are the files that you need, and they appear up-to-date. |

Actually they seem to be version 5.3.1.53 but it seems to be working fine on my system with Privacy Control enabled. |

That's closer, but so far we only know that symids.sys version 5.3.1.53 works with NIS/NPF 2003/2004. Everything we've seen so far for NIS/NPF 2002 is a build 5.3.1.54. Furthermore that download only seems to provide symids.sys (which works with Win NT/2K/XP), not symids.vxd (which would be required for Win 9x/ME).
I think we may well still be 24 hours from getting a legitimate file from Symantec.

WinXP Professional and NIS 2002. I think perhaps, if you take another look you will find that the symids.vxd file is in there. On the other hand it will probably be worth the wait for an official fix for the masses. Thanks again for all your help jv. |
