I can't help you because i don't use AOL myself, but you may want to use the search function of this forum. There have been several topics about Proxomitron and AOL. Unfortunately AOL software is rather troublesome in combinating with programs like Proxomitron.

You can try setting the AOL browser to use Proxo and ALSO setting your external, stand alone, IE to use Proxo. I believe that is what I did. (It has been a long time). That worked for me when I had AOL 4. and beta tested 6 and had Ad/Subtract which is based on licensed Proxo code. I was unable to filter internal AOL though and this did not always work on the web either. Most experts will tell you that you cannot use a proxy with AOL. Why would AOL allow that? They want to bug you to death with ads. But I did get Ad/subtract to work most of the time with the AOL browser, but never with the internal web pages of AOL. I always had my stand alone IE open when using the AOL version of IE and I think that is why it worked.

Your best bet is to connect to AOL, do whatever you like internally (visit the boards, check email, turn on the radio, etc) and then minimize AOL and open another browser. This can be your standalone IE or Netscape, Mozilla, Opera, etc. and configure that browser to use Proxo. That browser will then use the AOL connection to connect to the internet. You will still be connected to AOL and will know when mail comes in, or a buddy contacts you via Messenger, etc. When you ae through, just close the stand alone browser and then sign off AOL.

I had AOL for two years and seldom browsed via the AOL brand of IE. I minimized AOL and browsed via my standalone version of IE and via Netscape. Using Proxo in this manner is your best
bet and you can switch back to AOL to see your mail, etc. anytime you want. I used to switch back and forth all the time as I liked the beta boards at AOL and I had to use AOL more than usual when I beta tested ver.6 and 7.

One other thing, you may not see the ticker (when using another browser) that AOL uses to ask: "You have been idle for awhile. Do you wish to remain online"? So, you might get kicked off. I seldom had that problem as I could usually remain connected to AOL forever (until i had to use the phone). I don''t know if AOL still uses the ticker, but if so, you should download a timer or ask other AOL members who minimize AOL when surfing how they handle it.

Sir Fire, I am MOST impressed with your fix! Almost makes me wish I still had AOL so I could try it. Many users will be thanking you for this elegant fix.

As the originator of that thread, I'm intrigued by this updated news. Alas the Arne forum is no more, and the Google cache of that link ...

http://216.239.37.104/search?q=cache:im...C_ID%3D471

... doesn't include the updated news. Does anyone have it please?

My own investigations led nowhere, I'm afraid - I never did get IE+AOL8+Proxo working together. The best advice I can offer is to use WebWasher with it's "configuration-free" option (which uses some kind of Winsock hooking, and does work with IE+AOL8+Proxo - at least outside the AOL software: I don't know about inside, 'cos I never use that). Or (as mentioned above) use another browser. Since I'd rather keep Proxo than IE, I switched to Opera (after trying just about all the others too).

Now, I wouldn't go back to IE anyway, but if someone has found a way to make it work with AOL8+Proxo, I'd love to know how - out of interest if nothing else.

Fortunately I saved lots of posts from Arne's forum since I need to read and re-read Proxo info on filters in order to understand owing to the fact that I am a layman who loves the powerful effect of this great program. I have tried many web filtering programs and NONE compares with Proxo.

Good work Kye-U in getting the Administrators to contine working. They are an important asset.

Milly, here it is

I kicked AOL's butt. I got proxomitron working with it, and it only took about 6 hours of probing, logging, and tweaking the registry a couple dozen times to find the right key Smile

The proceeding is some of my mumblings and notes from my attempt to "put aol in it's place" and give the power to make decisions back to the user:

OS: Win2k Pro service pack 3
AOL: 9.0 optimized (9.0.0.0)
IE: 6.0.2800.1106
Tools used in the process: regmon, filemon

Proxo works if aol is not running. Once aol is running, proxo does not work.
Tried deleting AOL entry in dialup connections in Internet Settings. Didn't work.

ran regmon and filemon
detected following keys created:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\MigrateProxy SUCCESS 0x1
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ProxyEnable SUCCESS 0x1
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ProxyServer "http= 127.0.0.1:8080;https= 127.0.0.1:8080"
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ProxyServer "http= 127.0.0.1:8080;https= 127.0.0.1:8080"
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ProxyOveride NOTFOUND
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\AutoConfigURL NOTFOUND

Here's where it gets interesting:
EVENTID407 waol.exe SetValue HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ProxyEnable SUCCESS 0x0
EVENTID408 waol.exe DeleteValueKey HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ProxyServer SUCCESS

Now, there is also a key under Internet Settings in the registry called ZoneMap, and a key under that key is called ProxyBypass.

Also some file activity with MIB-II subagent is going on, interesting. It looks like they are going through a lot of trouble to keep those ads coming.

What AOL is doing is: creating a copy of the internet settings before it goes online, then reroutes your settings (!) to point the browser to AOL's own custom settings. After AOL is through spamming you with ads and banners and you go offline, it then deletes the settings it put in, and replaces them with the backup it made earlier. AOL makes many registry changes to the internet settings, but one in particular is the key we are looking for. It is a key created exclusively for AOL, and only exists while AOL is running. This particular key holds the proxy information that AOL's browser (actually IE) and the regular IE window uses.

Now it's time to get down to the business of defeating or reversing the hack AOL is using. How? Well, we'll have to either a)stop aol from changing these registry keys or b)change them back ourselves.

Solution A requires patching the AOL software, which I can do but I am lazy and will not attempt at this time to do so (maybe later if peeps really want a patch, or if other individuals would like to contribute to disassembling AOL code and developing a patch). This would likely be a painful process, as several patches would likely have to be made for the different versions of AOL that are out there.

Solution B only requires importing a registry hack before you sign on to AOL, which will allow proxomitron to work (and will continue to do so from that point on, including filtering AOL's browser). This is a much less painful process (from my point of view anyway).

So, I have developed a fix to knock some sense into AOL and allow IE to work with proxies again. The file link below is zip containing a registry entry. When you double-click it, it will change AOL's custom Internet Settings back to use localhost as a proxy on port 8080 for http and https. It enables the proxy handling again! Of course if you use different settings than I do or you want to change the values yourself keep reading for the step-by-step process to fix this yourself.

WARNING: EDITING YOUR REGISTRY CAN CAUSE UNDESIRED OPERATION.
BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE EDITING.
*** I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY LOSS OR DAMAGE THAT MAY RESULT FROM THE USE OF THE REGISTRY SETTINGS SUGGESTED BELOW. ***

Now that the disclaimer has be stated, for my quick fix, simply download the file below and double-click it BEFORE you have signed on to AOL. This particular file sets http proxy to 127.0.0.1:8080 and https proxy to 127.0.0.1:8080. If you are on a LAN, you should follow the step by step instructions to set the host yourself.

http://diemos.homelinux.net/downloads/aolfix.zip
or
Attachment: aolfix.zip 1.93 KB

To fix it yourself, follow these steps.

1. Make sure AOL is not running. Open IE, goto Tools/Internet Options and configure the LAN settings as outlined in the proxomitron installation instructions. I deleted the AOL dialup entry, you may or may not have an AOL entry, and I don't know if it matters that it's there or not (don't think so), so I just deleted it anyway. I would recommend deleting it.

2. For this step you don't need to be online. Be sure AOL is not running. Try to browse a foobar site like www.asdfjkl432123.com. You should see Proxomitron's familiar "Unable to find blah blah blah". If at this point you do not see Proxomitron's error screen, you may or may not wish to continue (as of the time of this post, nobody else has tested this reghack).

3. Run regedit (start/run/regedit). **Don't forget to backup your registry before changing anything*** Navigate your way to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections. Click on Connections and look in the right pane. You should see 2 REG_BINARY keys called DefaultConnectionSettings and SavedLegacySettings. Double-click DefaultConnectionSettings, and copy ALL that binary data to the clipboard. Close regedit.

4. Run AOL and sign on. Once you see your AOL Welcome screen, minimize aol and hit Refresh on IE. IE should now show you the familiar OS error screen, white background with options like "Detect Network Settings". At this point AOL has hijacked your browser's proxy settings and you lose control. One more reason to love AOL.

5. Run regedit again. Navigate your way to the same place as before: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections. Click on the connections key and look in the right pane. Now you should see a third key that wasn't there before called Internet (1). Double click Internet (1) and highlight ALL that binary data, right-click and paste the data you copied earlier. Look in the left pane and highlight (click on) connections. Go up to the top of the window and goto Registry/export registry file. You should make sure that you don't save the whole registry, just the branch (look at the bottom of the save file dialog for that option). Give the file a meaningful name, AOLFIX will do and save it where you can find it again (my documents).

6. Close regedit, and hit refresh in IE. If everything has gone well so far, you should see Proxomitron's error screen. Yay! But we're not done yet, because AOL will delete your changes as soon as you close AOL. They're trying to be sneaky by covering their tracks.

7. Logout and exit AOL. Run regedit yet again. AOL has deleted it's Internet (1) key. Go up to the top and goto Registry/import registry file. Select the file you saved in step 5 and hit OPEN. A window will popup (lol, how ironic) telling you that the data has been added to the registry. Close regedit. (when aol makes it's temporary Internet (1) key, it first checks to see if it already exists, and if it does it won't mess with it or delete it.)

8. Run AOL and login. Enjoy popup-free browsing!

These steps should only need to be performed once unless you re-install AOL.

I hope this helps everyone that has been wanting to use proxomitron with IE and AOL. I have been frustrated forever by AOL's tweaking of MY computer's core settings. I have called them on several occasions complaining about their tweaking, and they redirect the question or deny that the problem lies with their software. I have spoken to AOL floor managers and supervisors on some of those occasions, with the same teleprompter-scripted replies. "It's microsoft, it's not us.... call them and complain" or the ever amusing "Try reinstalling your whole goshdarn operating system, it must be broke but hey, we didn't break it!"

Well AOL, I have proof that it's your doing (as if any of us needed proof).

Anyway, I'll stop rambling about AOL (though I could fill a novel with my negative opinions of them)

Enjoy Smile

I noticed there was a copyright notice on Arne's board. I also notice that there is made a forum called "Archive of Arne's forum" in the so called "Un-Official Proxomitron Forum". I would recommend making sure your are allowed to post things from there.
Just my 2 cents.

Hi Paul,
The zip file has been sent.

On the matter of copyright at Arne's forum, how serious is it to share copied filters and discussions with other other proxo users.

I couldn't find an email address to ask him and I had copied several posts from that site in order to follow the discussions carefully?

What are your thoughts?

Thanks, I didn't notice anything that goes against data sharing. And first off, Google itself cached his site. So if Arne allowed Google to cache his site, then by default that information can be shared. As a webmaster, I can set my site to forbid Google from caching. Ergo...
