I kicked AOL's butt. I got proxomitron working with it, and it only took about 6 hours of probing, logging, and tweaking the registry a couple dozen times to find the right key |
Yeah, I've been there a few times

That might be a problem. I'm using AOL8, dialup, on XP Pro. I *think* AOL9 is just for broadband at the moment.

Now that the disclaimer has be stated, for my quick fix, simply download the file below and double-click it BEFORE you have signed on to AOL. This particular file sets http proxy to 127.0.0.1:8080 and https proxy to 127.0.0.1:8080. If you are on a LAN, you should follow the step by step instructions to set the host yourself.

I'll try that reg file when Paul kindly posts it again.

So far so good.

5. Run regedit again. Navigate your way to the same place as before: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections. Click on the connections key and look in the right pane. Now you should see a third key that wasn't there before called Internet (1).[...]
|
Nope. Not there, nor anywhere else, nor any number variation of Internet (n). I know AOL uses that nomenclature, and creates a related key at ...
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\RemoteAccess\Profile\The Internet (1)]
"EnableAutodisconnect"=hex:00,00,00,00
"EnableExitDisconnect"=hex:00,00,00,00
But nothing to mirror that proxy information anywhere I could see (with Regedit and Regmon). And the DefaultConnectionSettings retains the correct localhost proxy information (to no avail) before during and after AOL is running and/or connected.

7. Logout and exit AOL. Run regedit yet again. AOL has deleted it's Internet (1) key. Go up to the top and goto Registry/import registry file. Select the file you saved in step 5 and hit OPEN. A window will popup (lol, how ironic) telling you that the data has been added to the registry. Close regedit. (when aol makes it's temporary Internet (1) key, it first checks to see if it already exists, and if it does it won't mess with it or delete it.)
|
Well, I'll try it with SirFire's reg file, but it's not looking good.

8. Run AOL and login. Enjoy popup-free browsing!
These steps should only need to be performed once unless you re-install AOL. I hope this helps everyone that has been wanting to use proxomitron with IE and AOL. I have been frustrated forever by AOL's tweaking of MY computer's core settings. [...]
Enjoy |
I'm guessing SirFire is on a LAN or a broadband connection, and/or it's AOL9 and/or W2K specific. It doesn't seem to work here, anyway, alas

No matter what Arne may believe, I doubt he can claim copyright on posts made to his message board - they rightfully belong to their respective authors. I would also think anyone posting stuff to a public forum expects it to be shared. |

I just noticed the other forum is no more...
I have sent aolfix.zip to paul's email.

That could be, I will make an effort to provide info with XP, both with aol8 and aol9. Since I don't use XP, it may take me a few days to post any findings.
Anyone know what happened to the other forum?

Not hardly. I've tried dozens of times and get nothing but 404's after the very first page, IF I even get that. |

Thanks SirFire, and for posting your findings.

Yeah, I've looked up the details now, and you're right (though there isn't a UK version yet). The "optimized" bit is all for broadband use though.
I switched from AOL7 to AOL8 because they improved the dialup process, and added a decent auto-reconnection system. I can't see any benefit in going to AOL9 unless you actually use the software itself (or are on a broadband connection, or want an AOL blog!), rather than just minimising it (and hiding it, in my case) and using normal software. And yikes:-
"AOL8
64MB (megabytes) of RAM minimum
Hard drive free space required for install: 224 MB"
"AOL9
128 MB (megabytes) of RAM minimum
Between 420 - 440 MB of free hard drive space to install 9.0 Optimized"

Well, that's very kind of you - I look forward to reading it when you get a chance for another bout of probing, logging, and tweaking.

I have just visited the new forum and its working. You should either reload each page for which you are getting the 404s since it's most probably been cached by your browser. If that doesn't work empty your browser cache and try to connect to the site again. |

I don't believe a site can claim ownership of material written by others just because it was submitted to it. In the same way a book publisher doesn't own the author's rights to a book - unless it's explicitly signed away in a valid contract. I'm sure a few sites may attempt to claim such a condition in a terms of use page, but such things are unlikely to be legally binding.
In any case, you could always just write a tutorial yourself in your own words based on that info without any violation of copyright. The information itself is not what copyright protects. |
