mailwasher 4.1 slow

I don't have the latest Pentium 4 processor, but I upgraded from version 3.3 . It ran smoothly and it was great. 4.1 is now slow and choppy kind of thing.

Close mailwasher and start task manager, then restart mailwasher and tell us how long it takes to start and how much CPU it is using along with your CPU type and speed.

Mine doesn't start quickly, not sure how much of a problem it is and how much is due to the large training files and/or two weeks of the message logging. On my old Xeon 450 mhz system it is taking about 8 seconds to come up to where it starts mail checking with between 75 and 100 percent CPU use.

Mail checking takes about a second per message to complete (horrible connection with slow ping times) downloading and doing the FA and spamcop tests. CPU ise is around 50 percent during this time.

I started with Mailwasher Pro 4.0 and it was completely satisfactory. Upgraded to 4.1, not happy. When launching, a little dialogue box pops up and says it's "rebuilding." And checking the mail takes longer. For instance, one of the emails in the preview pane was displayed as "normal view," showing "first 2129 lines." I checked the settings, and it's set to display first 20 lines.

I saved the setup and registration key for the 4.0 version. Can I uninstall 4.1 and reinstall 4.0 without messing up Firetrust's records or whatever?

Going back versions can be tricky since the file formats for some of the tools change.

It sounds like you may have an error in the Learning data files all called "Training???" Before going backwards why don't you exit mailwasher completely, delete the three of them and reinstall 4.1 over the existing install and see if that fixes the problem?

I think some of these problems can be caused by interactions with virus checking programs, did you have yours turned on during the upgrade from 4.0 to 4.1?

If you do go backwards you might want to clean out the data directory and save your blacklist.txt file and filters.txt file elsewhere just to be safe.

Hopefully now that MW has moved to encrypted files for some of the data it should be less of a problem.

Not much encryption, letters rotated 13 numbers rotated 5, with a bit of work you can almost read it...

Stan, thanks for taking the time regarding my query above. For the sake of accuracy here, it turns out I have Mailwasher Pro 3.2, not 4.0. I reinstalled, and it's working fine. I'll read posts in the forum (and remember to close antivirus program) before trying upgrade again.

Perhaps. But as part of the stats, it seems to me that the number of msgs in the Learning archives and in the trash would be useful info for both tracking performance and as possible debugging clues. Skipping the decrypt and adding the analysis numbers would do it for me.

I didn't think of it as a big time burner of a project, I was expecting a filter type program that would when run read the encrypted files and spit out unencrypted ones. Shouldn't take much time for something like that.

I'll look at writing my own next time I need it, you can drop my request for it too.
