Lada Cossack is, for the money, surprisingly good. Still see quite a few and they take quite a bit of abuse and still keep going.
While in that sector, those early Suzuki's are a good buy. Separate chassis, spares cheap and they just keep going. I know they failed the "Elk Test" but, what the heck, for the money they're good. New ones are good too, still have separate chassis but cost to much.
First Landy l ever drove was a series 1. Also drove one of the LWB V8 powered series 3's. What a hoot. Can out-drag a Porche 911 to 80mph!
Surprisingly, the V8 motors are more fuel efficient than the 2 1/4 litre jobs.
Went on the LR site a while ago, only two gear levers in new Defender as opposed to the three that were in series 1 through 3. That said, new Defenders do have full-time 4wd whereas on earlier models 4wd had to be engaged. |

JEEP... When you own one, you'll know what I mean. No other vehicle in the world come with its own language like a JEEP.
How about the JEEP RESCUE... Man, do I want one.. |

Yup, the Jeep is special alright but not the best. When it comes down to choice for expeditionary work you will rarely see a jeep. It's almost always a Landrover, simple reason being it is best suited to the job.
Take a trip to Australia and the vehicle of choice is Toyota. In this case, choice comes down to survival. If you want to get from A to B and know you're going to make it, Toyota is the only choice. Toyota = survival.
Not even the Landrover can match the reliability of Toyota and Jeep doesn't even figure. You might catch a jeep or two in suburbia but no way in the open, hostile Aussie outback.
Sorry to say it, but in Australia, the Jeep is the exception, not the rule.
Don't believe? Take a trip and see for youself. If you can't do that, take a look at Jeep sales in Oz and, in particular look at who buys them and where they live. Won't be in the outback, guaranteed. |

Someone say "Jeeps rule"??
I have to agree, but let's not forget the Jeep XJ! ....(the poor mans LandRover)
Here's my daily driver:
http://www.olypen.com/craigh/
...A veteran of 257,000 miles! Still running strong, and I've only had to replace the water pump (+a few hoses) and the battery. THE most reliable vehicle I have ever owned in 40 years of driving!!! |

No, but as they say, "Great Jeeps are built, ..not bought". However, I'll add to that, all Jeeps are good right out of the box!!
