I'm running Mailwasher Pro; Benign; POPFile; and Outlook. Anybody else have this configuration? After some success I most often end up with Outlook "Can't make connection to outgoing server b9.127.0.0.1 Connection refused"

I've configured the ports so there is no conflict there, and from a cold start I can get success for some time, only to arrive at the error mentioned above. Any help? Thanks, MC

Why is Outlook pointing to the loopback address? Or do you have POPFile in that path? Here's what I have set up:

Server > POPFile > MWP

Server > B9 > Outlook Express

Is that your setup or something else?

I think my setup is Server-MWP-POPFile-Benign-Outlook
But POPFile and Benign seem to be doing some leapfrogging and then things get out of sync and I get the can't find error. I'll try and configure the programs as you have 'em. Any tricks in doing that? Thanks,

The setup you suggested isn't possible - MWP isn't a proxy so won't pass on msgs as your setup implies.

Tricks? I'd call it "knowing what you're doing".

Server > POPFile > MWP

The POPFile Documentation Project includes a good section on how to set up proxies (the "Configuring Proxies & Firewalls" section). Extrapolate that explanation to this case - i.e. MWP (not your email client) is to be proxied via POPFile, so that's where you change the account's User name field setup to pass on the mail server address info as 'your.POP3.server:username'.

Server > B9 > email client

Placing B9 in the path works differently - the host file is used to configure B9 addresses. In that case, the Username field isn't used to pass server address info. Instead, your email client must have the POP3 server address field pointing to 'your.POP3.server.B9' and your host file must define the loopback address to be substituted for 'your.POP3.server.B9' (something in the 127.98.9.n range).

Ok I'm havin' to learn on the fly here.....................
While I can pronounce and type the words my knowledge is not very deep on host files, and daisy chaining these apps.
I'll use my mccuil account as an example.
In MWP I've changed the server to 127.0.0.1 and the user name to 127.0.0.1:124%mail.comcast.net:110:mccuil I left the server port at 110

My local host file now has: 127.98.9.4 mail.comcast.net.b9.b9

I don't know why the double .b9 extension

I had to change the listening port of Benign to 256 as 110 is in use, I'm not sure how that plays into this.

My outlook has mail.comcast.net.b9 as the incoming server. So from what I've been able to deduce I should be ready to run.

The MWP account for mccuil is really hanging and then "timing out with no response from the server"

Server > POPFile > MWP

Do you have POPFile up and running?

The MWP uname doesn't look right to me. The structure should look like 'mail.comcast.net:110:mccuil', although the ':110' part should not be req't (may cause problems, never tried placing port # there). What's with the '127.0.0.1:124%' bit?

Server port should not have to change. Make sure POPFile configuration for 'POP3 listen port:' matches though.

Server > B9 > Outlook

As to getting your email client running via B9, I'll predict it won't work if config remains as you have it now.

Edit the host file to remove the extra '.b9'.

I'm not sure why you had to change the B9 "listening" port. 127.98.9.4 is a unique IP address so using 127.98.9.4:110 shouldn't conflict with any other use of port 110.

I forgot to mention it, but you did add the 'mail.comcast.net' account via the B9 Options > Accounts tab right?

You left the Outlook account using port 110? If you changed B9 to port 256, you may need to change the account's port in Outlook as well.

Ok my MWP is configured so: account name / server=mail.comcast.net / uname=mccuil server port number=110

POPFile listen port=110 POP3 host:port:user separator character:

Outlook accounts Incoming Mail Server=127.0.0.1 on port 110

Benign has been closed down.

MWP, POPFile, and Outlook all work fine.

Trying to extrapolate the POPFile info on proxy servers got me trying the % and other commands, apparently that wasn't correct.

When I import mail account mccuil into B9 it creates server b9.127.0.0.1 on port 110 although it cautioned that 110 was already in use and I could change the port in b9 and my email account to match.

B9 creates hosts:
# Begin B9
127.98.9.1 space b9.127.0.0.1.b9
127.98.9.2 space b9.127.0.0.1
# End B9

b9 also changes the outlook incoming server for mccuil to b9.127.0.0.1.b9

With port 110 in use by both b9 and outlook I get can't connect to incoming server changing both port settings to 256 (b9's recommend) I get a can't make outgoing connection to b9.127.0.0.1

I had everything functioning for several days with this set up using port 256 in b9 and outlook, and then the errors popped up and here I am.

So what more do I need to do to get b9 functioning.

Go figure, I clean everything up so MWP and POPFile and outlook all work together, clean out the servers in b9 and close it out. reboot, the b9 prompt comes up and I go ahead and load all my outlook accounts into b9. Send to two of the outlook accounts an article on Christopher Walken in today's NY Times http://www.nytimes.com/2004/05/30/magazine/30WALKEN.html and everything works fine, and is "processed by Firetrust Benign"

Well we'll see how long this lasts. BTW my OS is 2000

Well that was short lived. Sending myself a message gets the "..can't make outgoing connection.
http://www.cywash.com/errorb9.gif

so it's the outgoing? that is having the problem?

You got me. Now I'm more confused than you. Dunno what the h*ll a NY Times article has to do with this. Rolling Eyes

Recheck your settings I suppose. I'd redo the b9.127.0.0.1.b9 stuff but that's just me. If it worked once it should still work. Perhaps your host file is being modified by another app to remove changes. your AV or AT might do that to protect against a trojan that might want to hijack your computer.

what kind of a command line did you expect to see from this info:
" Server > POPFile > MWP

Benign was automatic in it's setup and changed to port 256. My setup for MWP, POPFIle did not change from before I added Benign. So it seems I really haven't daisy chained any sequence of events greater than I already had.

I thought your were suggesting I employ this bit of command for MWP. Do I use this chaining at all?

"Using http://127.0.0.1:8080/configuration, set the POPFile listen port to 123 and the POP3 host:port:user separator character: to a percent sign %.
Change the mail client's setup as follows:
pop3 server: 127.0.0.1
pop3 port: 123
username: 127.0.0.1:124%pop.isp.net:110:user "

I understand the logic, I don't know where to apply it.

mccuil,

I think he probably means ...

AV = Anti-Virus program
AT = Anti-Trojan program

Hang in there ... Wink
