Xxp error - isass.exe error

looking for some guidence please. on winxp home system whenever i boot up to normal boot or safe mode when i get to the welcome screen i get an error that says "isass.exe - an invalid parameter was passed to a service or function". my only option is to select OK which reboots me. in a vicious circle.

can anyone help me get rid of this. i have read that this error can sometimes be related to the sasser virus but i can get on to check or clean. i can't get past the administrator password in recovery console to do a repair. i don't think a password was ever enter, but since this is friend's computer, i have to verify that.

this box recently had a bad motherboard and ram which was replace but this error was coming up at times before this replacement

would greatly appreciate some help with this. thanks.

followup: just noticed, when i boot to a floppy, my "c" drive isn't showing. my western digital hard drive is showing in the bios though.

i am stumped. any suggestions on how to fix this mess?

i assume your reply was meant to be in another post topic. btw, the info about "c" drive not showing may be incorrect. i was trying to get to a dos prompt with a winMe floppy so i think that is why no "c" drive was showing as it didn't recognize the file system.

i do welcome any suggestions you may have regarding the isass.exe error i am getting. thanks.

can you be clear what of the 2 below it is

lsass.exe (L) good thing
isass.exe (I) bad thing

if its with "i"
then download and run Ad-aware, and alos Spybot S&D

Download & instal Adaware from http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=506
& update it before scanning.
In settings under 'scanning,' have it set to
'scan within archives,'
'scan active processes,'
'scan registry,'
'deepscan registry'
'scan my IE Favourites for banned URL's,'
'scan my host's file.'
Remove what it finds by placing a check in the box to the left of the object.
Reboot

Download & instal Spybot S&D from
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download or
http://spybot.safer-networking.de/index.php?page=download
Update it before scanning.
After the scan is complete, have spybot fix everything marked RED.
Reboot

then followed by :
Download : HiJack This from : http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html

Create and Unzip to a folder, not your Desktop or the Temp folder,
doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".
When the scan is finished, use "Save Log" button, save the log in a text file, and post it here

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YOURSELF NOW, Most of it is needed in this log.

as this point i am not sure if it is lsass.exe with a lower case L or not. it appears as this on the blue window border -- lsass.exe error (it doesn;t show as isass.exe but I am not sure if the capital I would look like lsass.exe)

then the text i mentioned is in the window itself

i can't get anywhere to run the removal tool incase it is the sasser

one thing i found out today is that if i use the ultimate boot CD or hiren boot CD and go to something like partition magic, my hard drive is showing up with the xp file system but it has no drive letter assigned, just *: instead of c:

i also can't run any of the spywares that you suggested as i can't boot even into safe mode.

it looks like whatever crashed this system messed up the boot record or something to make the operating system appear not to be there

i had already tried the fdisk /mbr to no avail. also i used a mbr tool off of a utility boot cd to view the mbr and i did notice in the hex data that it is having trouble locating the operating system or vice versa.

since i can't get into recovery console, i was considering upgrading from xphome to xpro. what do you think? is this doable without losing my programs and data?

if so, i have another question. booted to pro cd, selected install instead of recovery console. selected the existing partition with xp home but the next screen recommended that i not install to a partition with an existing operating system and referred me to microsoft's dual boot page for more info. it would let me continue but i stopped when not sure what to do.

any advice on any of this. just trying to get this thing back up without losing it all

here is a little update, maybe you can guide me on what to try next?
found my restoration CD that came with the computer and was able to boot to it. still having problems getting past password to recovery console. was able to get in twice, more later on that. when i booted to the CD i chose the repair option and system tried to repair and when setup screen came up showing installing xp and 39 minutes left i got the same "lsass.exe - invalid parameter" error window and even though the green progess bar kept moving, the install stayed at 39 minutes. when i click ok on the error window, it closes and reboots to this vicious circle i am in.

as i said, a couple of times the recovery console didn't ask me for a password and let me in. i ran chkdsk /f and it found one or more errors and fixed them. when i rebooted, same isass.exe error.

got into recovery console one more time and ran fixboot and fixmbr that someone suggested. when i rebooted, same isass.exe error.

is there anyway to keep this window from poping up? it seems to halt everything when it does pop up. i feel that i am close and it i can get past it this system can be salvaged. any help would be appreciated.
