PCworld is filtering just fine here. (also with Prox 4.2)

| Just an update before I really have to rush. After a while I got the same problem when using Prox 4.1 too. So I am no further in solving my problem. |

When I visit pcworld.com bypassing Proxo, the page is all junk. Insofar as hanging on websites, I haven't noticed anything. How about running a sniffer during your tests to see what happens to those packets?

After I came home again, I finally found my problem with IE. During all this changing of defaults, versions etc. I suddenly noticed that your site was in my Internet Zone (my most strict zone) So actually nothing was allowed. I am not sure how it got out of my trusted zone, but once back where it belongs, everything is now fine. As for the Opera thing, it is not related and must be one of the many bugs.
Well, at least I got to write a bounch of postings LOL  |

I have never had trouble with PCWorld, I had trouble right here, and it was because this site was in my most strict zone where nothing is allowed. Once I put it back into trusted zone the problem was gone. So my problem was not related to either Proxo or filters - just my zone settings and me being half blind  |

That's interesting.. I've seen people use both IE Zones and Proxo... my question is why? Just that added bit of redundancy?

| I will try turning one and one thing on asap. The Danish Hostmaster told me that my domain transfer will take place tomorrow, so I will get back to this when I have made the adjustments which are needed for my site to work on the new server. Just hope that new isp has things ready for the transfer so that the down time wont be too long. Anyway I am kind of keen on knowing which of the settings did this too, so I will try experimenting with it. |

More that added bit of freedom...I thought so too at first, but I must
admit I am adding additional layers too myself...JIC for that rare
moment I have unloaded Prox...sofar I've only gone as far as adding
http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm#IESPYAD
to my restricted zone...and ofcourse there is the hostfile
and the blocklist of the proxy...(not Proxo, actual proxy)
I think that the best reason is that it still protects you against at least
those sites even if you have disabled Prox temporarily. We must not
forget that even though *we* might have Prox running always, some
folk simply either bypass or unload it because they don't know how to
modify their filters to allow them to surf a site without problems.
It's basically the same question as why you would want to have a header
filter to kill certain URLs if these same URLs would also be caught by a
webfilter...[/url]

It is the same as with antivirus programs. They only catch what they are already programmed to catch. Proxo also only catches what there already is a filter for and not something new. I use the hosts file also

Yet another way to feel comfortable with security.  I run TDS-3, NOD32, and Wormguard (not to mention Script Sentry). On the browser side, I always felt comfortable with just Proxomitron. But, its always good to know how to use other tools, especially when they are used in conjunction.

I think this is what is also a common cause for problems for less experienced users. Often they'll start using a tool by referral. Once they have one installed, they hear from various sides 'This is a great tool for privacy protection' or similar yadda, and they often tend to think, 'Wow, if tool A alone offers great protection, imagine how wel I would be protected if I also run tool B?" And they are ofcourse correct in this, but there is the risk of it also making it sometimes more complicated than it should be, by perhaps choosing or combining lesser suited tools...
The risk is then that since configuration errors can now occur in more than one place, the less experienced user would not have enough knowledge to fix things if things go south. This is ofcourse no reason to not use these tools, but it makes it harder to solve any problems via a post in a forum, simply because what we think is logical can be totally different from that what lesser experienced users think is logical.
In short, even though multiple layers are often better, give more freedom to temporarily switch of one layer in favor of another, they can also cause unexpected problems if combined incorrectly...
