Wow Apologies to everyone for going off the thread's subject, but something is definitely out of kilter here. That was my first post ever, so maybe it says zero because it only counts previous posts? I don't get an X button, just Quote and Edit. I wonder if the reason it posted me four times is maybe my computer got the hiccups from eating too much spam at once. I just hope I didn't booger up the whole site.
[edit] I DO get the X in this post, so the problem must've been isolated. |

Strange. No need to apologize. It has to be something weird going on here. Now this page shows as page 2 of 2. Also you show as having posted once.

Thanks for the cleanup, Phoenix. That looks a lot better. Maybe your 3 deletions subtracted from my count of 1, gave me the -2. Not a problem to me though, since I'm not keeping score. |

I guess it'd help if I'd log in first. I did mention that I was a newbie, didn't I?

Two weeks later...
Getting back to the original subject, it still seems that the only "Known Spam" I'm getting has either already been reporetd by myself (because it's also in my blacklist) or legitimate email that I had signed up for. One "Known Spam" was even a personal friend, a regular individual person. This surely isn't turning out the way I was hoping, and unless there are some major changes made, I can't see any point in continuing to use it, let alone pay money so I can hand-sort everything. |

This makes me wonder exactly how FirstAlert has their system setup. If it is based on an e-mail address, rather than the IP address of the machine, then there could definitely be a problem, since the spammers are smart enough to forge the address.
I have received spam myself that claimed to be from me (but from the spammer's IP address)! I don't report those to FirstAlert, or even add those to my personal blacklist.

First Alert is not based on any header information, either IP addresses or e-mail addresses. It is based on a digital fingerprint of the message body - and possibly the subject line.
My first alert hit rate is almost zero the past few days, I'm hoping they are tweaking the database again! |

Same here! I sure hope it's only a temporary glitch...

I'd like to put in a word for altruism
I don't mind reporting the spam; it gives me a good feeling to take some kind of revenge. Gives you something not too destructive to do when you feel completely impotent. Like the "close door" buttons in elevators that aren't really connected to anything but keep you from pounding on the real buttons (that is how they work, right?)
And I don't really want Spam Cop to do anything for me. My filters are better at picking up spam. I'm perfectly happy to click on the report button just before I click on the "process spam" button. I got out of the autodelete business when I realized how easy it is to include a double separator mark and delete everything by mistake (||).
In fact, I'd like the option of having First Alert NOT label things as "known spam;" I can figure that out myself when there's no checkbox to report it, and it prevents me seeing if my filters would have missed it. |

Ok, that's an infinitely better use of your time than checking the bounce checkmark!

That's why EVERY filter should have auto-delete turned off whenever a change is made to a filter ... and remain off until filter operation has (once again) been verified.

Just check the 'This filter takes precedence over the friends list' option. USUALLY this takes precedence over the FA! filter. "Why not always?" you ask? Beats me. It seems the FA! filter sometimes has a mind of it's own....

But I don't want it to override my friends list. I want friends first, filters second, spam cop last in priority. |
