On this 50th anniversary of Playboy Magazine, perhaps a discussion of pornography is appropriate. Pornography is defined as
sexually explicit pictures, writing, or other material whose primary purpose is to cause sexual arousal. Those who promote it believe they are exercising their right from the first amendment of the United States Constitution:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

The delicate question before us goes beyond the legal justification for allowing anyone to speak or write about anything they choose to. It speaks to the moral and ethical ramifications of such an enterprise. Our society today is inundated with references to sexuality in any medium we experience. The often quoted justification is that "sex sells" and therefore if marketing outlets can somehow equate a material purchase with sexual gratification, then some hidden unmet need will be satisfied. This is Freudianomics at its worst. Sex is promoted today as a means to an end and not the expression of love between consenting adults. Pornography portrays sex as some lustful hedonism with little regard for the potential outcome of such an experience. Still, millions of people purchase it for their own sexual stimulation. They believe that since those being filmed are consenting adults there is no harm to anyone. Assuming there is mutual consent among the actors, what is the difference between paying them to have sex with each other and paying a prostitute to have sex with you? Whether you favor or oppose pornography, it is this country's obsession with sex that is the root of the problem and the unfortunate consequences it produces. Until we as a nation can collectively mature out of this sexual pre-occupation we will be trapped in our own national adolescence.

Outlook: Internet Honeypots

Michael Schrage
Information Security Expert
Monday, January 12, 2004; 12:00 PM

They're deceptively alluring, and alluringly effective. They're called honeypots -- fake Web sites and chat rooms intended to attract and trap Internet malefactors from hackers and crackers to kiddie-porn peddlers. Last month, police in Britain, the United States and Australia launched a major global honeypot initiative dubbed Operation Pin to crack down on child pornographers. But honeypots should be much more widely used than that, argues information security expert Michael Schrage in his Sunday Outlook piece ("We Can Trap More Crooks With a Net Full of Honey"). In the war against crime and terrorism, their deployment should be explicit business and government policy. Cheap, easy and cost-effective, they could prove to be the "smart-bombs" of crime-fighting and counterterrorism, and prove the adage that sometimes, dishonesty is the best policy.

Schrage will be online Monday, Jan. 12 at Noon ET, to discuss his article.

Schrage is senior adviser to MIT's Security Studies program and co-director of the MIT Media Lab's eMarkets Initiative. He writes frequently about the intersection of public policy and technological innovation.

We Can Trap More Crooks With a Net Full of Honey

By Michael Schrage
Sunday, January 11, 2004; Page B01

The site looks temptingly authentic. Its pictures are graphic, the kind that would immediately appeal to a pedophile. A customer cruising the Net for kiddie porn would want to double-click to see more. But wait. Before he touches the mouse, he's compelled to ask himself: Is this online offer for real? Or is this an FBI setup? Is he actually purchasing the photos? Or will his next keystrokes provoke a felony arrest? He can't be sure.

That's precisely the point, if you click onto a Web site run by Operation Pin, a global law enforcement initiative launched last month by police in Britain, the United States and Australia. It uses fake sites and chat rooms to crack down on adults who seek to purchase child pornography online or to use the Internet to make inappropriate contact with the underaged. Announced with fanfare and explicitly designed to sow fear, doubt and uncertainty among buyers and sellers in that criminal marketplace, Operation Pin is intended to deter as well as entrap. The project's global presence denies child pornographers the ability to navigate the Net with confidence.
