I have test driven both got a big GM Card Discount but the Ford looks good but does not drive as smooth as the GMC. I think the Fords are cheaper. Any advice out there on which Diesal is better . The Duramax is quieter.

depends on the use.......but in general....(no pun) Ford builds a better truck....always have and always will.... IMHO and supported by my personal fleet experiences...(which are many and varied). My personal vehicles are: 02' GTP Pont. and 96' LT4 Corvette.

point number one:
back in 96 or 97, international (ford diesel maker) went to a split shot injection. the fuel is sprayed in, in 2 shots. about 10% and 90% to follow with in milliseconds. what that does is to give the initial burn (explosion) on very little fuel followed by a great burn for total power. isuzu (gm diesel maker) followed suit but to a different degree.

point number two:
gm/chevy has an independant front suspension (due to the 'truck' buying public wanting a more car like ride) in order to get that, they needed to cut alot of weight out of the engine. they did that by putting aluminum heads on the cast iron block. this works well with normal compression ratios of 8-10:1 as found in gas engines. diesels typically run 17-23:1 compression. its this high compression that provides the ignition. the differential heating properties of aluminum and iron cause head gasket problems at these ratios. my cousin (who is a died in the wool MOPAR fan)works for a small farm community GM dealership in michigan. last year he had about 6-7 duramax diesels in for headgasket replacement. he works in parts and saw the parts needed go out most of the time. he may have missed some if he was on vacation etc.

point number three:
GVW and GCVW is affected by suspension. IFS is not good for heavy heavy weights.

point number four:
the gm/chevy trucks have a great transmission in the allison but like all mechanical things, they are subject to breakage

point number five:
the ford hd some issues with the early 04 models injectors. those were addressed in november december 03 i believe but like all mechanical things, they are subject to breakage.

point number six:
there is a reason ford has the best selling pickup truck for the last 25 years. now thats usually based against gm or against chevy but not the two of them. except in 99 when they outsold them both combined.

point number seven:
ford uses international engines. gm/chevy uses isuzu. international is based in indiana AMERICA. isuzu is based in JAPAN. regardless of how much gm owns of isuzu.

i have an early 99 4x4 crewcab with the 8' box. it has the 235hp 500lbft 7.3L. the new 6.0L is like 300+hp and 550 or 560lbft. i dont have the numbers on the isuzu.

just my $0.02 on the subject...

hope you enjoy whichever one you get. i actually work for daimlerchrysler and that 600lbft cummins HO sounds good but we dont have a true crewcab. the 4 door is just an extended cab that the doors open the correct way. although they DID extend the cab THREE INCHES...

david

those are just my thoughts
