Hi all I am new to Computer Cops and took advantage of the "Computer Cops UDP 1000+ Port Scanner". I am not certain what it does but it seemed a good idea at the time. However it has finished (I think) and says "998 ports initially detected open. cleanup iterations: 5."
Can anyone explain if this is good or bad please. Confused
Thanks very much

Hi, it runs thru a few times to validate its initial results. Did you allow it to complete?

Thanks for replying.
Yes it finished scaning 1000 ports but it looked like it was still working so I left it, but when I returned to the PC the webpage said server unavailable!

Should I run it again and what purpose does it serve?

Try one of the smaller port scans from UDP first.

Thanks for your help Paul, I'll give it a go.

Should the ports be open or closed or what?

Closed means good, there is nothing listening on those ports waiting for a connection. The problem is when you have open ports, because then an outside connection can be made into your system.

Last question (I think).
If ideally they should be closed how can I close them? I am running Win XP Pro with Zone Alarm Pro (if that helps)
Thanks for all the help!
