Is your Event Log Service running ? if i'm not mistaking, it has to be on to be able to start the Task Scheduler Service.

Hello JacobsCreek, I had that problem for a long time myself until a couple of days ago when I got my thinking cap on.
Get Administrative Tools in Control Panel. Look for "Services" when found
look for Task Scheduler, right click for Properties and make your selection
it will be Manual or Automatic. That should be it. See attachment;

I tried all of this. Even Event Log service has been already started. When I go to Services and select "Task Scheduler", "Start", "Stop", "Pause" buttons are not enabled and it says "Starting". I dont know whats going on. Its freaking annoying. I have been trying to fix this for the last one month.
Please guys...help me out from this.
Thanks. |

Have you tried this yet:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as...bContent=1
Deals with your specific error.

I first thought of doing that but then noticed that solution was for Windows NT and I am running Windows XP. As I didnt want to take a risk by playing with registry I didnt try it.
Any comments ? ideas ? Pleaseee |

XP is pretty much just a dummed down version of NT. It would not hurt to try. Just export the old keys before modifying them. If it does not work put the old keys back in.

Now Here is one more Problem.
I tried this solution but system couldn't find "mstask.exe". And then my Windows Explorer screwed up. As soon as I click on my computer it started displaying "Torch" symbol.
Then I disabled WIA service and again put that registry value back as it was.
So the conclusion is my system doesnt have "mstask.exe"
Instead of
ImagePath = %SystemRoot%\System32\Mstask.exe
my computer has this value....
ImagePath = %SystemRoot%\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs |

I think I got the solution. I actually had this nice long beatiful post written, but AOL crashed before it ever got sent.... suprise! Thanks for everyone LEADING me in the right direction...
Anyway this is what happend: I disabled the Event Log trying to make my system boot faster. To quote Microsoft "If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start." Actually it says "This service cannot be stopped".
Anyway the fix: Open control panel and administrative tools and services, find EVENT LOG, double click it and select automatic for startup type. Then click start on the left pane. Now find Task Scheduler and do the same...
hope it works

I too had problem with scheduled tasks.. have Norton installed on Windows XP home pc with wireless network.
I wil cut to the chase here as this took many long hours trawling the net for answers talking to DELL / MSN .. uninstalling just about everything..
tried 'scannow' etc etc.. did a Repair Install from XP disk ..
problem still there .. can't stop or start scheduled tasks.. can't pause, can't add a task..
unable to change anything in services tab.. everthing greyed out ..
try this .. it'll takes seconds and solved my problem
in c:\windows you find the schedlgu.txt log file
right click , check the properties tab
if it's in read only then uncheck that box
that should do it ..
just reboot and check that the service comes up OK via the EVENT viewer
good luck & please post if this helps

As posted above I had a problem where I couldn't do a single task with Task Schedular. I discovered if I went into "Services" and r/clicked Task Schedular it brought up "properties" I changed it to "automatic". Problem solved.
