Carbon dating shows us, among many other things, that the world is many billions of years old and that the dinosaurs and many millions of other species of beast pre-dated humanity by millions and millions of years.
So, what do you think? Is carbon dating a verifiable and easily proved scientific process for dating ancient objects? Or is it a piece of scientific flim flam created by godless scientists? |

didn't carbon dating as say some crave drawings were hurdred of miilions of years old, when the sheriff came and said I did that when i was a kid, about 20-30 years ago. I have a hard time believing an element on the periodic table to help date things. How do we know that we didnt screwup the periodic table. after all how many other tables of the elements came first? and if the table is right how do we know that we calculated the decay of carbon correctly? There is just to many places for science to screwup for me to believe |

You need to do your homework. See:

Carbon dating is a tool, nothing more, nothing less. Like any other tool, it can be helpful, when misused, it can cause harm.

K027, thanks for the link. I do indeed need to do my homework.
Interesting tho: 56 views but only 5 votes.
Oh well, maybe I blew it by screwing up the science.

only the inventor of math and science and physics can tell you what rate of decay he planned into the equations.
i'll ask HIM when i get there.

You need to do your homework. See:
http://www.cs.colorado.edu/~lindsay/creation/carbon.html *
|
* Creation Science site (like that's not an oxymoron.) The only mistake here is in the wording, which should say radioactive dating instead of carbon14 dating. Lindsay is a deist apologist and the the above site is misleading if not a lie of omission (but that's OK, I guess the rules go out the window in defense of the true faith)
From How Stuff Works....
Quote: |
Because the half-life of carbon-14 is 5,700 years, it is only reliable for dating objects up to about 60,000 years old. However, the principle of carbon-14 dating applies to other isotopes as well. Potassium-40 is another radioactive element naturally found in your body and has a half-life of 1.3 billion years. Other useful radioisotopes for radioactive dating include Uranium -235 (half-life = 704 million years), Uranium -238 (half-life = 4.5 billion years), Thorium-232 (half-life = 14 billion years) and Rubidium-87 (half-life = 49 billion years).
The use of various radioisotopes allows the dating of biological and geological samples with a high degree of accuracy. However, radioisotope dating may not work so well in the future. Anything that dies after the 1940s, when Nuclear bombs, nuclear reactors and open-air nuclear tests started changing things, will be harder to date precisely. |
And Mrs. Hoppes sites are all scientific creationist or deist apologetic also. Do you guys ever read anything not filtered through your religions?
Mrs. Hoppes sites all attempt to debunk scientific dating beyond the biblical genesis of 4004 (or whatever) BCE, on the assumption that all dating is done using carbon14 with it's limit of 5-6 thousand year effective range, again ignoring the other longer range isotopes, and in one case at least, using quotes from carbon dating scientists made in the 1950s
to bolster their anti science postion. Again, less than honest.

Ahem, excuse me guys,
Because the radioactive half-life of a given radioisotope is not affected by temperature, physical or chemical state, or any other influence of the environment outside the nucleus save direct particle interactions with the nucleus, then radioactive samples continue to decay at a predictable rate. If determinations or reasonable estimates of the original composition of a radioactive sample can be made, then the amounts of the radioisotopes present can provide a measurement of the time elapsed.
One such method is called carbon dating, which is limited to the dating of organic (once living) materials. The longer-lived radioisotopes in minerals provide evidence of long time scales in geological processes. While original compositions cannot be determined with certainty, various combination measurements provide self-consistent values for the the times of formations of certain geologic deposits. These clocks-in-the-rocks methods provide data for modeling the formation of the Earth and solar system.
There.
