I'm having a recurring problem with an about:blank search page being set as my IE start page in the registry, and I can't find the BHO that keeps causing the switch. I've looked at other posts here and have deleted a number of things, but it keeps happening. My Hijack This log is below. Thanks so much.

Hi sidwell78,

Run hijackThis again (in his own folder) and let it fix the following items:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [System Update] C:\WINDOWS\System\explorer.exe

Reboot the computer in safe mode and delete
the file explorer.exe in C:\WINDOWS\System\

Attention: There is a file explorer.exe in your Windows-folder too, and that is a good one. Just delete the explorer.exer in the system-folder!!

Hi Mark

I have the same problem as Sidewell.

My system has 3 copies of explorer but 2 are old/from installation.
ie

Directory of C:\WINNT
29/08/2002 10:41 1,004,032 explorer.exe
Directory of C:\WINNT\$NtServicePackUninstall$
23/08/2001 12:00 1,000,960 explorer.exe
Directory of C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386
29/08/2002 10:41 1,004,032 explorer.exe

Here is what I find -

The adware appears to be an BHO generated with Microsoft's "let us help you write spyware" IEAK kit. (Registry key: "IEAKHelpString This is a customised version of Internet Explorer").

If I reset reg. keys and delete the desk top icons the adware regenerates the keys & icons when IE6 runs.

I can reinstall IE6, but will this kill the adware .DLL ?

I need an adware crusher which is SAFE & WORKS and, better, is not "terminate & stay resident" ?

Marc:

I've done as you instructed, and I'm still having the problem with the autoloading about:blank in IE. And my problems seem to be more than I thought: I have an MS-DOS batch file named "o" on my desktop which reads as follows:

if not exist C:\WINDOWSstatuslog ftp -sSurprised
if exist ClrSchP028.exe ClrSchP028.exe
if exist calsdr.exe calsdr.exe

Also, when I run Trend Micro's virus scan, a number of temp files are indicated by my Norton AntiVirus to be infected with the Trojan.Bookmarker.C virus. I delete them, but I've run the scan a number of times and they keep coming back. Additionally, the Trend Micro Housecall finds the following viruses in a folder named C:/_RESTORE:
TROJ SMALL.X
ADW RULEDOR.C
TROJ TINPIK.A
TROJ ISTBAR.K
TROJ ISTBAR.N

When I try to delete these files, I'm denied because the files are in use, even though I close all running programs with CTRL+ALT+DELETE. I've also tried to eradicate the infected files in Safe Mode to no avail. Please help!

My current Hijack This log reads as follows:

Hi Sidwell

Some comments.

I suspect ClrSchP028.exe is from adware company clearsearch
I presume you found the exe and deleted it.

ISTBAR.K is from IST bar which adds a toolbar to IE (view/toolbars).
I found their code easy to remove cos it was in "program files".
Deregister IST's dll with regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\ISTbar\istbar.dll"
before removing

When you failed to remove ISTbar etc did you stop explorer.
(Open the DOS box BEFORE halting explorer). You MIGHT then be able to "del" the files. Restart with "explorer"

I find that after fixing the reg keys(Hkey_local_machine/software/microsoft/internet explorer/main
they are set back when I allow scripts to run.

Disabling scripts gives me a respite from about.blank and stops the scumware crashing the browser. Not a fix but it helps

My OS is XP Pro but I have the same version of IE6 as you
(6.00.2800.1106)

Hi Sidwell

My last post should have included this.

I found a copy of either Powerscan or ISTsvc's exe in

C:\winnt\profiles\john pearson\settings\temp

Can't remember which I found but be sure to search
your whole puter for 2nd copies of this scumware.

Hi sidwell78,

Disable system restore before you scan your computer on viruses.
That’s the only way to remove the infected files in a system restore point.
Delete the bach-file on your desktop.
Look in C:\WINDOWS and delete statuslog

Look if these processes are running. If it is yes, kill them with the taskamanager:
ClrSchP028.exe
ClrSchP028.exe
calsdr.exe
calsdr.exe

Run hijackThis again and let it fix the following items:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank

Reboot in safe mode and delete:
ClrSchP028.exe
ClrSchP028.exe
calsdr.exe
calsdr.exe

Reboot.

Hi, had the same problem as you all are describing
I am using a borrowed computer so have no AV or PFW.

You can get rid of all the spyware malware etc by installing adaware

www.lavasoft.dk

Its free software and scans your PC for trojans, malware, spyware and anything dodgy companies use to sell you their products.

I realise i am a newbie to this, so dont take my word for it, check out PCPRO either nov 03 or dec 03 issue I think where they reaved about this software.

Good luck to all
Very Happy

Sad I'm having similar problems with about:blank, but I'm using Windows XP. I downloaded the XP service pack 1 and that's when I started having problems. No matter how many times I go in and change my home page settings, about:blank still opens when I logon to the internet. I have also tried deleting several items and nothing seems to work. Can you please help me?

After much nashing of teeth, swearing and muttering -
I used cwshredder and it took care of the problem.
I use XP Home with IE 6

The link is below:

Download CoolWebShredder. http://home.iprimus.com.au/mbuchan/cwshredder.zip

Unzip, run, click "Fix".

Restart computer.
