I have computer trouble and have no idea how to fix it.

Almost everytime I run an exe/short-cut.
I get the Windows Installer window pop up, the program I want to open does with no problems, but I cannot figure out how to stop this problem.
The window hangs round for a few seconds then disappears.

Win 200 Pro.

Any ideas ?

Do you have Office 2000 installed? It tends to use windows installer shortcuts rather than the regular shortcuts. You'll have to re-create shortcuts from the desktop | new | shortcut | browse to the exe.

I too am having Windows Installer problems. I believe its involved with a trojan which is just raising hell with my system. I have Office XP and it was running great till recently. Now, everytime I start Outlook, Windows Installer starts up and tries to completely install Office XP all over again. When I finally deleted all instances of Outlook, and installed Outlook Express, I thought I was in the clear, but here it is today trying to install MS Publisher. It would be great if I didn't already own these programs. Any help out there? Thanks in advance.

I ended up reformatting my PC to clean up all the other crap I had anyway

Try either

http://support.microsoft.com/default.as...-us;265194
(Windows Installer Appears when a Program is started)

or
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as...-us;324209
(When you try to start a packaged program after you log off and then log back on, some Microsoft Installer (MSI) packages may be reinstalled.)

Thanks Rustic Dog, it seems to have cleared up the problem on my pc.

Just wondering if anyone with this problem has either had a virus (just cleaned off download.trojan) or has used a registry clean up program lately.

I was just wondering what might have caused this.

Neither. I had installed Windows 2000 though then removed as I installed OpenOffice.

This isn't just an office issue, it happens with all manner of software. The problem is in the Microsoft Windows Installer- And no one seems to know how to kill this problem once and for all. I need to know how to stop this from popping up all the time. And not just on one OS but on 2K XP 98 etc... There must be one solution.
PLEASE HELP

I had similar probs untill I uninst Works 6.0 & leave Qffice2002 Pro alone (I had both installed at first). After a visit at Office Update the probs was gone. The problem for me was everytime I logged in to XP (not the other 5, 4 regular user & 1 Admin) WMI started about 3-5 times installing something. I never get a chance to see what, but it filled up a log-file with thousands of rows. After it was fixed I colud notice a much quicker start.

Looks like I qualify to join the Windoze Installer Hate Club. And here I thought it must have been something I didn't uninstall properly (WI always asks for the same install image which I didn't bother saving when I uninstalled it a year ago). I can't say that any of the posts to this topic match my situation though.

In my case (Win2K Advanced Server), the WI screen pops up when initializing particular programs (or part of a program) for the first time. I wait until WI times out and I press 'Cancel'. Often the same WI screen/timeout reoccurs 5 to 10 times before it finally goes away. For now I live with it, bit it sure is a big PITA!

Any idea what would happen if I were to uninstall WI?

To Ikeb:
I think you will having even more problems with inst pgm:s than you having now. Now it's just to wait for WI to finish. If you uninst WI, you must inst WI everytime you will start this specific programs that starts WI.
To all other:
A search at M-soft was giving this example when you need Japaneese language (very often I use Japaneese Smile:
Whether you are running Office XP Setup for the first time or running it in Maintenance Mode, change the installation state of the International Support option to Run from My Computer. http://support.microsoft.com/default.as...-us;290740
I also found a lot about Outlook with the kind of problem.
Try a search here http://support.microsoft.com/default.as...EN-US&FR=0 with these words: windows installer start
All Microsoft products; All the words entered
An other problem with Word 2002:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as...-us;323217
Office 2000:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as...-us;312596
Viso2002:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as...-us;299259

Hope anyone find anything in this...

I have XP Home, and when ever i open an executable or shortcut ect. the windows installer try for Office 2000 Standard pops up. If i hit cancel it pops up again like 7 times or so then finaly goes away and the program openes properly, i have installed the patch on Microsofts site but have no luck, any ideas out there?
