I've been trying to fix an issue with my home PC which has a couple different profiles (me, daughter, etc). The OS is Windows XP. Does the spyware that I run need to be run for each profile? Thanks for your help!

I've found that Spybot S & D only checks on the the profile that's in use at the time of running. Ad-Aware which does pretty much the same job will check all profiles, no matter which one is in use. Just my own personal observations.

If you are running Ad-Aware and wish to install additional software, remember to unlock the registry beforehand as programs won't install unless you do.

Hey Richard, I found exactly the opposite with Adaware since I've been using XP. Maybe it's something to do with how I have it set up (all users have admin rights). Any ideas?

Not sure about this Liz. For obvious reasons, l had the second account set to restricted. Now though, it's set to admin and the firewall sets the limits on content viewed. Much wailing and knashing of teeth from a certain party. Wink Tough.

Take the case of Spyware Guard. I D/loaded it on my account and it starts when l boot up. On the second account, it has to be kick started. I'm not sure whether l should D/load another copy on account two or twiddle with settings. I could go to Wilders(?) and ask, think i'll twiddle first.

Think part of this could depend on which account is used for downloading. Also, on the software itsself, some allowing for WinXP and it's multiple accounts, some not. That said, i've D/loaded stuff on my side only to have it appear on the other Confused

Moving from an Amiga and dos to WinXP was a huge change for me, so XP is all l know in the Win family. Only similarity was Amiga's WorkBench, a true WIMP system, way ahead of any Win OS in it's day.

Maybe this thread will open a whole new can of....beans.

I'd twiddle first, another copy might be considered overkill Wink

I asked this question a while back and here is the response I got from Parputt:

"XP is a funny creature. Or should I say some applications have a hard time understanding XP. Most apps., when installed under one profile, will run system wide. Others will not. Doing a scan with AdAware or Spybot will check the entire computer. However, if you want to make sure that all your security apps. are running on all profiles, just log into each profile and check the Task Manager to insure they are running. I have only run into the problem of an application having to be installed on each profile a limited number of times."

Thanks for that OldGuy. I have to say that Spybot S & D will not scan my entire system. I've proven it by deliberately collecting cookies l don't want on both accounts then running Spybot. It simply will not clear both accounts at once.

Switch accounts, run Spybot again and, bingo, it picks up on that which it should have removed during the first scan.

Conclusion being that it, and other programs, only work on one account/profile at a time.

Thanks Mariner, looks like you were right.

Just ran Spybot on my wife's profile and it found registry entries for, amongst other things Blazefind, Commonname and Cydoor.

Guess I have some more work to do.

So, does this also mean that if I run an HJT log I have to do so from each profile as well, because I thought this PC was clean ?

What about Spywaregaurd and Spyware Blaster ?

I definitely had the same thing with Adaware, it picked up different entries on each identity.

Just ran HJT on all three identities. Only the R0 entries were different, all other entries and running processes were the same. Problem is, this isn't a good test as there were no bad entries found. I'm sure someone will let us know Smile

We have 4 users on the family computer, and I just ran HJT on 2 of them.

I have two 08 entries, my wife has six; 4 of them are Commonname.

So I guess that tells us something !

I will lilliebet

I'm gonna run logs on the other 2 users and submit them all, just in case, but first I'm gonna run Adaware, etc on all the profiles and clean up what I can.

Good idea OldGuy. If you do post multiple logs please make sure you make it understood you're not duplicating.

I've asked for advice on the multiple user issue, will let you know the results. Smile
