Hallo,

I'm having problems with logging onto sites such as mail.yahoo.com and ebay and the like because they all require cookies, I get 'cookies need to be enabled' errors whenever I try to log in. The prox seems to work because I can browse other sites fine.

I am not clear on what to put exactly in the cookie block list. I have tried setting in Headers\Set-cookie: Make all cookies session only (in) (ticking both and only in) and nothing seems to work. Help!

I'm using Opera7 and Proxomitron 4.5j with JD5000 config plugin.

Hi Ser3nity,

I don't run JD's config, but you should have a list called "CookieList". This list specifies what cookies are allowed. To find & edit the list, right click on the proxo icon in the system tray, point to "Edit Blockfile", then click on the "CookieList" file.

Instructions and examples are in the shown in the file. If you need more help, post back.

Hi Mike,

I got as far as being able to edit that list, as it came it was something like this:

# Header Filters: Set-cookie: Make all cookies session only (in)
# Set-cookie: Never accept cookies (In)
# Cookie: Kill a cookie (out)
#
# For basic cookie control using "Disable JavaScript (and meta) cookies"
# and "Set-cookie: Make all cookies session only" works pretty well.
# This will allow most cookies but make them temporary (and mostly #harmless)
#
# For a more hard line approach, use the "Set-cookie: Never accept #cookies"
# and "Cookie: Kill a cookie" header filters in place of "session only"
# this will block all cookies not explicitly permitted in this list
#
# EXAMPLE ENTRIES:
#
# [a-z]+.microsoft.com/
# (www.|)slashdot.org/
# *.myhost.com/mypage.html
#
#
*.yahoo.com/

Here at the bottom I have added *.yahoo.com/ but I don't know if this is the right thing to do. I was using the how to above, and referred to what was in the log window at the time to confirm the address.

I have set the filters for basic cookie control, assuming I should tick the box(es) specified in brackets after the entry in the HTTP Message Header list.. for example this item is in the list:

Set-cookie: Make all cookies session only (in)

I have looked through the help files and can find nothing about cookies.

There are not many sites I frequent that use cookies but those I do are kind of essential atm.

If you can tell me what to write/tick and where to get this info in the future I'd really appreciate it.

Hi Ser3nity, looks like your right on track.

Your yahoo cookie entry looks fine to me. I have a couple set up the same way.

To enable a header filter "check" the (in) or (out) box as appropriate. To disable it, uncheck it.

Cookies are a two way street. The server sets a cookie (in header) then the browser sends back the cookie (out header).

If you enable a filter such as:
Set-cookie: Make all cookies session only (in)

Any cookie that is not in your CookieList will be turned into a session only cookie.

Note that if you also have a filter enabled that kills incoming cookies, such as:
Set-cookie: 2. Never accept cookies (In)

It will also match. In this case, a cookie from a site not in your list is first turned into a session only cookie, then it's killed.

If you want to kill all cookies not in your CookieList and turn those in your list into session only, modify the session only filter by removing the not symbol ^ from the URL Match then enable both filters.

The second part of the equation is controlling what cookies are allowed out, and in my opinion, the most important.

For this you need to enable a filter such as:
Cookie: Kill a cookie (out)

This filter will prevent any cookie thats not in your CookieList from being sent back to the server.

After you edit a list, you need to reload it. You can do this by right clicking on the proxo icon in the system tray, scroll up to "Add to Blockfile", then click on "Reload lists".

Finally, be aware the javascript can also read/write cookies.

HTH
