|
|
Friend has multiple problems, various spyware/virus issues. Scans show various dataminers recurring. Running on cable modem with no known firewall. Attempts to install Norton unsucessful, install screen dissapears after selecting intall or browse option. Attempted scan from Symantec site, computer restarted partway through. Computer reboots randomly. Can't run/install Norton disc from D drive screen, either. OS is 2000. Ran Hijack This and posted log on that forum, but suspect other issues and wonder if anyone has any insight here. |

I'd try two things...
You know you have adware/dataminers - download an adware finder/remover (freeware), install it and run it when disconnected from net. may even be able to run this in safe mode if possible.
Run norton av from powerup - startup with disc in drive and let it do its thing. then try and install norton av again.
in both the above i'd do this when disconnected from the network. |

Thanks. Booted regular way and into safe mode with disc in drive. No help there. Jut uninstalled Spyhunter and updated Adaware on Sunday. Tried live update for current Norton Antivirus previously installed, got error message about olepro32.dll, wrong path. I found Olepro in there, maybe just just not on the path mentioned in the error message? Finally was able to do full scan from the Symantec site. Found two infected files: c:\winnt\winnt\system32\px.exe showing Download Trojan. Also c:\recycler\s-1-5-21-107-8081533-1214440339-725345543-1002-\Dc87.exe showing Backdoor.trojan. 2nd one was in Norton-protected recycle bin. I have now moved the first one there. Still no difference. Seems the fixes for this involve a download update that I can't do, or booting up with Norton disc, instructions for which we don't have. |

if you can get to the symantec website goto support and search on the error re: "olepro32.dll" you received when running liveupdate - even if you see this in the correct location it may have been corrupted and need a reload. Sysmantec site lists two easy ways to do this 1-using your software disks or 2- reloading your MS IExplorer.
As far as booting up the pc with the norton disk you will have to have the pc bios set to allow a drive (other than C to be read when started. In the past I've simply put the NAV disk in the cdrom drive then did shutdown/restart. It will start and provide instructions from there to run anti-virus. |
