|
|
I just scanned the Benign topics and didn't see one for a wish list. Maybe this will kick it off.
I know there is a Minimize to the System Tray option. Since a running Benign is absolutely necessary to check mail, I would like to see Benign also close to the System Tray rather than bringing up the "Are you sure you want to quit?" dialog box.
Many critical programs (anti-virus, firewall, etc.) have this feature. The only way to actually close the programs is to right click the System Tray icon and choose exit, shutdown, or some such. Good examples are Zone Alarm and AVG Anti-Virus ... I'm sure there are many more. I would allow for a more consistant operation.

Yes, I've found it a little awkward too because the click to maximise and minimise seems to be different from that of systray programmes like Norton Internet Security.

Just a consolidation of other suggestions made in this forum and the B9 Troubleshooting forum.
Limit access to hosts file
Quote: |
bill3 - Benign to only access the hosts file when necessary. |
Image place holders
Quote: |
0x334B - option that enables the program to put place holders where tags were located and by extension write out the ALT attribute |
Title while running
Quote: |
UserFriendly - Benign doesn't have a 'title' when it's running. When you hover your pointer over it's systray icon, you don't get a tooltip.
Timeghost - I didn't see any tooltip while B9 was minimized to the tray. But then after I restored it and re-minimized it, I saw the tooltip.
UserFriendly - Must be a bug |
Tracking offending email messages
Quote: |
ikeb - easily find emails that B9 modified for specific problems
example - file attachments with extensions that B9 modified
a) what the file extension was before it was modified, and
b) who sent the email.
Topdog - a more robust report feature |
Delete benign log file
Quote: |
goodude - add a way to delete the log file
spy1 - workaround can be found at: /postlite2692-log.html+file ( Summary and Logs) |
Benign Features - Questions
Quote: |
SimonSays - display the non-standard tags and identify the associated email message
- a minimal amount of information about each of Benign's actions stored in a log with the date and time of the associated email message. |
Benign Updates
Quote: |
WilliamP - some sort of notification to the updates. Maybe changed to include a check for updates function |
In comparison to MailWasher there are relatively few suggestions. I suppose that's the nature of the beast. I hope though that FireTrust does spend some time examining the suggestions and implementing a number of them especially WRT tracking down and reporting sources that exibit a lot of violations.
Hamish, could you find out if/when a B9 update can be expected?

I made several suggestions to the B9 support about better detection and removal of spam tracking codes. Unfortunately, so far nothing changed in the program.
Instead of deleting the log files, I think it might be better to have the program rotate them automatically. Allow the user to keep log of just the last "n" days, and count the actions performed in the days before, but don't keep the log for them.
As well, a better UI would be nice. The huge buttons are not pretty, the log pane to the right has almost no purpose but can't be hidden, the program does not obey to the XP look and feel... which seems to be a common problem to all eCosm programs I own so far (B9, MW, MSGTAG).

Benign 1.41 release date is pencilled in for August 12th 2003.
Hopefully no delays.

Based on the version number this appears to be a bug fix release. Are any new features planned?

There are minor features planned *we do read your posts*
Minimising on X button for example....
Parental controls are what we are discussing now, so B9 is not focused just on the security aspects of e-mail.

Hi Rusticdog:
In B9 updates, will FireTrust ever add file types to the list of those blocked and renamed in the default profiles? I ask this in response to this post, which suggests that even data files can harbor malicious content. Were I to rely soley on the defaults, some day the default Low profile might not afford sufficient protection.
And thank you, as always, for listening! |

We have discussed this and we do need to look into these types of files, archive files were also discussed as the sobig-e variant was distributed as a .zip which Benign ignores, though blocking a Zip file is not always approporaite, at least renaming it so the user reuqires that extra confirmation first could save them from infection.

I use ZIP files here at work (on the company LAN email system) to get around the Outlook security patch. If I were a virus writer, I'd definitely use ZIP, too. But AFAIK, ZIP files don't automatically invoke code when they're opened. I can see how deciding what to do with them is a dilemma.
Thanks for replying. |

Hi Guys,
My wish list item is.
I would like to see the option within the B9 program to edit the standard footer link and text.
I would like to be able to include my referral link so any referrals are credited to me.

Would it be possible to code B9 to look inside archive files and take action based on its contents? For example, if the attachment were a ZIP file that contained at least one VBS file, treat the entire archive as though it were a VBS file.
As well, include a "levels deep" control option for those cases where the archive contains an archive, which contains an archive.... Users of less powerful computers can set this low (3 for example) for improved performance, while users of very powerful boxes can set this higher for "better protection."

Except maybe the unzipper, consider what could be done with that with a two stage attack.

|

Hi all
You can add .zip and other compression file extensions manually to Benign
Refer http://www.computercops.biz/postt7307.html
These file extension options may be added in later versions.
Thanks for all the feedback.
Cheers
Hamish
