I think that homeschooling your children is great. I think that that way you can instill in your child/children what you want them to know. Then they will not have all the influences of all the other children. You can have a good child but easy to be influenced that can miss up their lives before they can get mature enough to know what to do with their lives. Also the drugs now are bad.....you don't have to worry about that, (I hope not anyway!) I am interested to see what people think about this subject. |

This is called brainwashing and would probably work better with those drugs you deplore. What you want them to know is not relevant to their reality Children should be taught what they need to survive and prosper in the real world. Children should not be taught religion. Religion is little more than institutionalized racism. Society would be vastly improved if parents could somehow be denied the opportunity to pass on to their children their more deplorable ideas like racism, hatred, envy, religious chauvanism, et al, while still being able to pass on their better qualities (if any. there are lots of people out there for whom it should be illegal to have children)
Children need to have social interaction with peer groups to develope normally, keeping children in isolation cannot be healthy.

No. It is called taking responsibility for your children.

As long as those taking resposability are themselves responsible, which I might be prpared to concede, given a de facto interest in the education of the child. But of course I can't be happy with the religious aspect. Religion is one of the major reasons proffered for homeschooling. Are those kids being taught creationism at the expense of evolution?
Then there is the community aspect. Schools are quite possibly the last remaining threads of glue that bind communities together. If enough people pull their kids out of school the tax base that supports public schools will dry up, schools will close, a sense of community will be a thing of the past. Argueably it's too late in some areas already, but not in reality. If people would put the effort into straightening the schools up, and raising their children with more than passing interest, the tide can be reversed. Spending more on education and health care and and a little less on the military might help, too.

Whether I hs or send my son to public school, I am still paying taxes to support public schools. Blaming the rise in hsing as a result in the degradation of public school systems does not fly.
As far as military cut backs.... look at what that has resulted in.... We have guardsmen fighting a war because of full-time military cuts thanks to Clinton. We cut back in military spending anymore, we are going to be fighting and defending our country with nothing more than brooms, shovels, and pitch forks. (Or for you city folk... tire irons.)
As for the theory of evolution... I will teach it to my child. But I will also teach him what God says as well. "Here is what people say and here is what God says and here is the science."

The United States, being the most formidable military power, it is worth looking at their spending, compared to the rest of the world. Consider the following:
On the military in general, the USA spends more than the rest of the G7 countries combined
The U.S. military budget request for Fiscal Year 2005 is $420.7 billion
For Fiscal Year 2004 it was $399.1 billion.
For Fiscal Year 2003 it was $396.1 billion.
For Fiscal Year 2002 it was $343.2 billion.
For Fiscal Year 2001 it was $305 billion. And Congress had increased that budget request to $310 billion.
This was up from approximately $288.8 billion, in 2000.
Putting these numbers into some context:
The US military budget is more than eight times larger than the Chinese budget, the second largest spender.
The US military budget is more than twenty nine times as large as the combined spending of $14.4 billion from the seven “rogue” states (Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Sudan and Syria)
It is more than the combined spending of the next twenty three nations.
The United States and its close allies spend more than the rest of the world combined, accounting for some two thirds to three-quarters of all military spending, depending on who you count as close allies (typically NATO countries, Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan and South Korea)
The seven potential “enemies,” Russia, and China together spend $116.2 billion, 27.6% of the U.S. military budget.
I would think you could spare a few bucks for the kids. (So could we, as soon as we get some helicopters that actually fly.)

Couldn't ask for much more than that Mrs Hoppes (well I could, but I guess that might be pushing it a little)
