Bocking Flash Ads?

Recently Ive been seeing these irritating flash ads on web sites. Is there a way to block these using Proxomitron? Right clicking on the ads either brings up info for Flash, or settings for flash, but no URL or anything else.

Never mind. I found a place to check to block flash right in Proxomitron. Problem solved.

Not really.

Proxomitron's default "anti flash ads" filter does only very partial work.
Many sites learned how to bypass it (for example, launching the flash only
indirectly - via a javascript).

Fortunately, for all of us, JD's filter has solved the problem perfectly.

I only discovered that check box for flash just yesterday, and so far it is working just fine.

As for the thread you linked me to, and JDs filters, none of that means anything to me. I have no idea what to do with it, or I would try it.

This site http://www.jd5000.net/ does nothing for me. It tells me nothing. I understand nothing. I dont even know what this site is or what it does. Nothing explains what I am downloading, or how to use it once Ive downloaded it. I am not a programer. Most of this stuff is over my head.

Wingspar, I am replying here although I saw your thread at DSLreports. Upieper is correct but here's a bit more on getting the filters. (Did you do a search at DSLR? There is a ton of threads on Proxo).

JD's filters become more and more necessary the longer we get from the last Proxo update. Since Proxo is no longer being developed, you are going to need to get JD's filters at some point otherwise such ads as the Google ones will not be filtered. I was like you four or five months ago. I had never used anything but Proxo and by the time ads were starting to show, Scott would have a new version of Proxo with new filters. Well, those days are gone. A few months ago, I started getting irritated at those Google ads all over - not just on Google and some other ads creeping through too.

I was confused at first too by JD's filters and how to use them. It is actually not hard, but I agree his site is intimidating at first. On JD's site see on the left where it says "JD List" and under that download? Click on that and you will download an installer "JDList_10-24-03.exe" to your desktop or whatever folder you download programs to. When it is downloaded, click on it and there will be instructions to follow. Select everything to install. Once it is installed, right click on the Proxo icon in the systray. You will see a list.
Hover the mouse over "load config file" and then, on the list that pops up, click on "JD_extra.config". Then open the Proxo main window by clicking on Proxo in the systray and Proxo will now not have psychedelic colors but will have JD's interface. It will say "new config file loaded" at the bottom. Check gif animation if you want that disabled. Then up at the top see the icons to the right of "help"? Click on the one next to Help (the first one on the right of help). This saves the changes. Then click on "file" upper left corner and then on "save default settings". This saves the config file that you have chosen so that it is now default and when you restart Proxo it will load.

You can load a different config file and make it default by repeating the above steps. JD's "extra" config is the one most recommended. You can also try the basic one. Leave the advanced one alone at least for the time being.

Next, come over to JD's forum here and pester him. Very Happy

That is what I did. You can do a search for my posts when I first got his config as I had a bunch of questions and I didn't know how to save the config I chose so that it was default. JD was very patient and gave me a lot of help.

I didn't even mean you'll do half of this.
Do you see that little code box in that post?
Yes? Good. Copy it (it starts with the word [Patterns]).
Then open up Proxomitron, click "Web Page".
Then click on the white space and finally right click and choose "import".
Now press ok and be sure to save it for the future (ctrl+d).

You now have that filter (not all JD's filters. Just this one!) working!

That got that filter in there fine, but it really had nothing to do with blocking flash, and the next time I turned the computer on, it was completely gone. Checking the "Flash animation killer" box does block flash, but I have to recheck it every time I turn the computer back on. I'm going to try downloading JD's filters this morning. Its kind of a hassle, but there is only one site that I go to that has recently added flash ads, so I only need it for that one site, and checking the box to kill flash works. My version of Proxomitron is Naoko 4.5 [2003-6-1] Is this the latest that was released, and will JDs filters work with it?

Yes JD's filters will work with that version of Proxo. I have the May 22, 2003 version and his filters work fine. I didn't see any reason to get that final version that all the squabbling was about.

As I said earlier, I think it time everyone start using either JD's or someone else's filiters other wise more and more ads are going to come through.

JD will be releasing a new set soon. Some of us are trying out the alpha version now. I'm trying out the basic version. (I would never venture into the advanced one)! If you have problems with the Oct set, those problems are fixed in this new set that is in alpha. But post in his forum if you have a problem as most likely there is a fix. I had trouble watching CNN videos with the Oct set until he gave me a fix (which is being incorporated into the new set of filters).

As for having to reset flash in Proxo when you turn on the computer each time, did you remember to click ok and then on the main proxo page click the icon next to "help" and down at the bottom it should say "changes saved"?

Are you using IE? This has nothing to do with Proxo, but you can kill Flash using Spware Blaster (which you should have anyway) on the tools page click on Flash tab and then check the box. You can toggle Flash on and off here by unchecking the box if you want to see a Flash site and then rechecking the box. If you are using Firefox or Mozilla browsers, you can get a plugin that allows for a toggle switch so you can toggle Flash on and off and that is the most convenient way. I don't use the Flash option in Proxo. I had Flash killbit set in Spyware Blaster for IE(using the checkmark as I described) and I have never downloaded Flash for Firefox and Mozilla so I don't have the plugin to toggle Flash on and off as I just don't use Flash on those browsers. Usually Flash is for obnoxious ads and Flash is a movie where you have no control ...Proxo and your regular browser controls are disabled when watching Flash and I resent that so I avoid Flash entirely if at all possible. If I absolutely have to see something using Flash, then I uncheck the box in Spyware Blaster and fire up IE and watch the Flash site and then recheck the box. So, in case you didn't know, there are ways besides Proxo to temporarily or permanently kill Flash. (I also write to the Webmaster of any site that refuses to give me a non-Flash version and complain).

I didnt know about the button next to the help. Just tried that. Ill see if it took the next time I turn the computer on.

I Never use IE. I use Netscape 7.01 Compact, and downloaded Firefox .8 at work two days ago to try it out. They have some issues to fix before I give any serious consideration to changing from Netscape to Firefox.

I went thru all the plug-ins for Firefox and dont remember any Flash killers, tho Ive heard there are supposed to be there. The list is long and confusing. I wasnt aware of a flash blocker for Netscape.
