a funny little application I found that works with ZoneAlarm (or you can use manually) is called 'Slap'. It enables you to send a packet back to whoever scanned your ports with a message attached just to let them know you're aware of their presense.

That is really not a good idea, and for the most part unnecessary. Most of the incoming packets that are stopped by ZA are just uncontrolled programs on a system somewhere that is run by someone that doesn't have a clue, And if it is someone that is looking for open machines, you just said, HEY I AM HERE TRY AND GET ME. And if you have the smallest hole in ZA (because you left AIM open or something else) then that is a spot they can get thru. Security is like hunting, 99% of the battle is to make yourself disappear. And you are making yourself visable.

Nods someone else mentioned the same thing to me recently and it's a good point; kind of defeats the purpose and may do the opposite of what is desired. |
