I recently worked on daughters (shes 18 yo) comp....first of all you should know she is not very comp literate, she had no AV prog, no firewall, no spyware prog, nothing on it for protection at all....

I found and got rid of 15 viruses off the bat, and hundreds of spyware infections, not to mention the thousands upon thousands of temp files....I installed antivir personal addition, zonealarm and adaware.

After I did that, after she had taken her cpu home, I talked her thru installing and running 'the cleaner' on it, and it found 16 more, all of which she was able to quarentine except two....oneclicknetsearch and abetterinternet, both of which were found a few times each, but one instance of both couldnt be quarentined?

Also, I had her read to me what progs were running in tcactive, and she had sev with no descriptions, so I searched those, and one was sysupd.exe, which I'm finding from reading thru the forums, it can be a prob to get rid of......

I had her go to start and search and search for this files containing this sysupd.exe and it found almost 20 things....can she safely search for files containing sysupd.exe and delete all instances found of it?

Any suggestions on how I can help her get this cleaned up? Should I call her and talk her thru installing HijackThis and talk her thru scanning and saving a log and post it? I am very hesitant to tell her delete this or that, because she is....well, not comp lit at all, very unlit and doesnt have much common sense either (not being mean, just trying to let you know what I am workin with lol).

I think I should also mention, she has a Dell and runs XP Home on it, her system is still almost brand new, bought late Feb or early March and its slower then a freakin snail in high, so I think there may be other probs that I didnt find other than the sysupd.exe.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I would suggest that she posts a log here and someone here will talk her through the procedures and fixes. (she should register as a member as she'll get help alot quicker)

She will get a far greater appreciation of what she is responsible for if she has to clear it all up herself (instead of having her parents hassling her Wink )

Also, she will be directed to get the right stuff downloaded for protection as well

cheers
