Posted: Sat May 01, 2004 6:01 pm Post subject: Win XP system restore tab missing ! |
|
|
Hi all,
I'm using winXP professional edition and have a problem. My system tab is gone from both my_computer - properties AND control_panel - system. If i try to run system restore manually from start - programs - accessorries - system_tools - system_restore, all i get is the error message "system restore is unable to protect your system. please restart your computer ...". However the problem persists even after i reboot the com.
I have a 80 gig hd partitioned into c drive(30g) and d drive(50g). System restore used to work fine for both drives until a rogue program created lots of temp files that ate up all my space in d drive leaving only 18mb. I removed all the temp files (i think) and also deleted some large files, restoring about 2 gig free space in d drive.
But the system restore tab didn't come back even after i tried all of the below (after countless googles and yahoos) :
Quote: |
1. Run the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc)
2. Go to Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / System / System
Restore
3. Set Turn off System Restore and Turn off Configuration to Disable
4. Right click on My Computer
5. Select Manage
6. Go to Services and Applications / Services
7. Scroll down to System Restore Service
8. Set it for Automatic
9. Click on the Start button to start the service
10. Close down this window
11. Go back to the Group Policy Editor and configure both to Not configured
12. Now when you right click on My Computer, there should be a tab for
System Restore and you can configure how much space will be used. |
and
Quote: |
reinstall sr.inf in C:\windows\inf\sr.inf |
and
Quote: |
changing permission levels in both "C:\system volume information" and "d:\system volume information" to "permit all" for both SYSTEM and my account. |
I ran srdiag.exe and got a SR-eventLog.txt file. Most of it is below (in chronological order from newest to oldest)
***** start of logfile *****
Message: The System Restore initialization process failed. (x50)
Message: System Restore monitoring was disabled on all drives.
Message: The System Restore service has resumed monitoring due to space freed on the system drive.
Message: The System Restore service has been suspended because there is not enough disk space available on the drive 200. System Restore will automatically resume service once at least È MB of free disk space is available on the system drive.

***** end of logfile *****
The suspension and resuming earlier on was probably due to the rogue program. But after I've resoved all the space issues, system restore still hasn't come back. The first line of the logfile was repeated over 50 times.
Pls help, I need to clear away all my restore points. It's taking up 12 gig worth of space from what i see in ShowMan. With d drive almost full and most free space in c drive eaten up by system restore files, my system has slowed to a crawl.

Ok
This my first ever posting any kind of tech forum so please bear with me.
I was having the exact same problem (only in XP Home) as meandarer and I just managed to sort it out with a pointing in the right direction from one of the quotes in his message.
I found out that XP Home doesn't have a GPEDIT tool so that ruled out the first possible solution, for me anyway.
So I tried the second quote instructing "reinstall sr.inf in c:\windows\inf\sr.inf". In XP Home the inf folder is a hidden folder and the inf file extensions are all hidden as well, not a big problem really as I have chosen to view all hidden files anyway.
I found the sr.inf, right clicked and selected the install option. It then asked me to locate the file "sr.sys" on Win XP HE service pack 1. It initially pointed me to c:\windows\inf\i386, the requested file did not exsist there so I tried c:\i386 were I was pleased to find a file called "SR", so I chose this and clicked open then ok on the needed files dialog.
Some warnings about this file being older than the one presently on the system for several of the components, I chose to install them anyway. Once I restarted my system restore tab was back and restore seems to be working fine so far, touch wood.
Sorry if I have been a bit long winded but this problem was really getting me riled up and I haven't been able to find much help on the topic so I thought I would put this out there to help anyone in the same boat. I need to add the disclaimer that not everyone's sytem will be the same as mine and I take no resposibilty for any of my advice ... yada yada yada.
Hope this work for you
P.S. Cheers to whomever the source of that second quote was, meanderer did not mention his source for that quote.
