Cable modem install equals boot up issues...?

I've had RoadRunner service for over a year now. Ever since the install, my PC will not boot up correctly unless the PC stays off for just over an hour. Without the nap time, it freezes shortly after Windows starts. The freeze is accompanied with a repetitive mouse-clicking noise. I shut off the power and wait for about 1 hour and 20 minutes, then the PC boots up just fine.

I've never heard of this issue. I've dealt with it for a while (a trade-off for highspeed access), but it drives me mad everytime I do something that requires a reboot. Any ideas what's causing this? Any ideas of what might solve it?

BTW, my PC info...W98SE, Celeron at 500, and 96 megs of RAM. Let me know if more info is needed. Thanks again.

Give is some specs on your puter.... such as operating system, cpu, memory etc.

What you posted could be the sound of your hard drive resetting. This sometimes happens after the drive heats ups and would account for the long cool down period. This sort of thing can be caused by a weak component on the controler board, (on the drive) or because the drive is not getting enough airflow in which case the disc heat enough to expand out of alignment.

Listen for the ticking. Is is coming from the case? If you're able, pull the cover off and listen to the hard drive(s). If it is coming from there, make sure that there isn't something restriction air flow, clean out the dirt inside the case (don't forget the holes where air flows into the case or the fan grills). If it continues to fail, you should replace it ASAP.

If it is the drive, the time between failures will get to be less and less. If you don't wait you might be able to install new drive, install windows and copy over you data by installing your old drive as a slave. This gets to be a real pain when the old drive will only run for a few minutes at a time.
