windows xp logs in and then logs out

The problem is I ran adaware it found 290 things... I removed all of them and then restarted.

now once windows loads up I have the option to log in as my user and administrator. Either one I pick windows will attempt to load and the wallpaper will flash then i get logged out. No apparent error messages are seen.

logging in with safe mode doesn't work either
logging in with safe mode (command prompt) & (network) doesn't work either.

Last good know config doesn't work either.

I'm kinda stuck. I am not reformatting... i know there is a way around this. has anyone ever experienced this before? I read some of the previous posts about this but none have answered my question.

i have this exact same problem. i ran adware, got rid of about 200 things, restart, and cant log back in, even in safe mode or 'last good known config' mode. if u have any information, please help us.

ok I figured it out. somehow one of the registry keys where changed. Here's what I did to fix it.

Using ERD Commander and regedit.

navigate to
[hkey_local_machine] > software > microsoft > windows nt > current version > winlogon

the value for userinit was set to: c:\windows\system32\wsaupdater.exe,

this is not correct it should be set to: c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,
(including the commas)

after rebooting i was successfully able to log in again and no problems since then.
