Does anyone know anything about Sonic Update Manager? I noticed it in the post that "gatorgar" made. I'm wondering if gatorgar got rid of it and how? I have it on my computer and every time I boot up it comes up on the desktop trying to install something, but it never installs just hangs until I click the cancel button a zillion times to get it to stop. Is this a program I'm supposed to have with windows XP? Also, my uninstall tabs are missing from all my programs in add/remove programs. Does anyone know what causes this and how to get them back? |

Forgive, I'm a bit slow today. I had a look at the only post by 'gatorgar' and didn't notice him talking about Sonic Down Loader. Is this the Sonic application used for creating and burning CDs? If so, it is probably trying to 'phone home', but I'm not sure.
Are you running a firewall other than the one that comes with XP?
About the missing add/remove programs...are you saying that when you go to add/remove you don't see a listing of your applications?
Have you run a virus scan of recent or have you been infected of recent? I think the folks on this form need a bit more information. |

Here it is straight out of gatorgars log.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateManager] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r
The exact same line is in my log as well. I think it has something to do with a software program called DVD X Rescue. Maybe I need to reinstall it.
I am running Zone Alarm.
As for the add/remove, the list of programs IS there, I just don't have the little add/remove button next to each programs name.
I have Norton Antivirus and haven't been infected recently. |

This is very interesting but I do not believe it is sinister. I've done some research and found this about sgtray.exe:
Quote: |
System Tray icon and background monitoring task for Veritas Storage Guard which in most cases gets installed as part of Backup Exec Desktop or Backup Exec Desktop Pro (as well as some of the other Veritas backup products). When running in the background, Storage Guard alerts you when you have not done a backup of your data for a while. Also, if you decide to do a backup you can do it straight from the System Tray icon |
.
WhenI've seen it, it looks like this;
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [StorageGuard] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r.
I'm guessing, but it seems that [UpdateManager] is trying to do just that, check for updates on this application. Do you have the Storage Guard program? If so, it wants to run each time you boot in the background to check on you with reguard to making backups. Depending on what you do with your machine, this could be a good thing. But you can disable it in your startup list if you wish and not have those annoying events when you boot. Does this make sense to you?
Your Zone Alarm will noy let it out for updates unless you choose.. I generally do manual updates except for my Norton AV.
About the add/remove thing, I'm not sure what is going on there. What happens when you right click on a program? Hope this helps.

Most of this makes sense. When I right click on a program in the add/remove nothing happens. I'll keep researching. Thank you for your help and your time. |

You are welcome. Sorry I couldn't help on the add/remove issue, perhaps someone else has an idea. When you do get it fixed, would you let us know how?

You can use regedit (carefully) to remove the sonic update from the system startup list. See this link:
http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/fo...eadid=6461
The list of programs that are launched at startup is hidden in the registry.
Run Regedit and go to the following key: hkey_local_machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr
entVersion
Programs that are launched at startup are in the directories:
Run
RunOnce
RunOnceEx
RunServices
RunservicesOnce
Programs that you removed from that startup list via Msconfig have the same name, but with a minus sign at the end. You can safely delete these entries.
---------end quote from michel
i have done this for other programs. The program will be there, it just won't start on boot. |

I have a new computer - Compaq. Sonic Update Manager kept asking for internet access. I allowed this only to be told that it could not connect.
There was a note pad item in the folder saying that the drivers were incompatible with Windows XP.
The Sonic file in Programme Files / Common Files is the programme used to burn CD's DVD's. I contacted Compaq who advised me to remove Sonic Update manager using add/remove programmes. I then deleted the programme itself. There are, I suspect, better freeware alternatives to dowload. |

I installed Stomp Backup My PC and got that notice also. I have a program called Startup Cop that lets stop programs from running. Yuo should be able to stop it with MSCONFIG. |

to get rid of it: go to http://spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip and scan your pc. In one of the outcomes you will find the sonic update manager. Mark this line to be "fixed" and you're problem is gone.

Unlike the olde versions of windows, When I first look at the list populated for add/remove programs there is no add/remove button there but when I select the item the change/remove buttons show up. |

I just removed it from the Startup in the registry. I am not sure what Record Now (My Sonic Product) needs to be updating so regularily? |

I was able to fix this strange problem by first following the instructiuons of another reply using the "hijackthis" scan. That stopped the recurrent message for the sonic manager update. I then (windows XP users) did a system restore from before the time this problem occured, this reestablished my ability to access the add/remove tabs. |
