My antivirus software detected a virus (Download.Trojan) in a file called Belt.exe & Belt.cab. They were in my local settings/temp folder. I was not able to quarantine the items nor delete them. My virus software replies with "quarantine failed" and "repair failed". So, I just found the file myself and deleted it. So far, I'm not experiencing any problems....but can somebody tell me what this was?

Belt.exe is indeed an Adware downloader trojan, and you may have more issues deserving attention.

We'd like to have a closer look at your configuration. Please do the following:
Go to http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/ , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please show us its contents.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Thanks!

In Hijack This, check all of the following items, then close all browser windows, and press "Fix Checked":

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {000006B1-19B5-414A-849F-2A3C64AE6939} - C:\WINDOWS\bi.dll

Now restart your computer, and delete that Belt.exe file, if still there.

Cheers,

IMABROKER,

I've not had a chance to go through your log yet, but I will. I think your problems are an unsecured IE browser and you need to get some protection and some knowledge about how you are picking up this stuff.

So while I'm going over this, please refer to this excellent post by Tony Klein and do some of the things he has listed (especially SpywareBlaster and Spyware Guard). You also need to have an Antispyware scanner. It is all in there for you.

So how did I get infected in the first place?
http://www.computercops.biz/postt7736.html

Also - it would help it you could tell us what the symptoms are that make you think you have an infection again, or is your AV notifying you of something?

One of us will be back with some results of looking at your log Smile

OK - have looked at your log and nothing jumps out at me as a problem, so unless someone else can see something, do please tell us what your AV is telling you it cannot delete or repair.

I am wondering ....you did disable your system restore when you fixed those items Tony Klein listed for you? If not, it might be picking up something in that folder.

I agree.
Turn off System Restore.
1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check Turn off System Restore.
5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
6. Restart the computer.
7. Go back to the System restore tab and uncheck that same box
8. Apply.

Rescan with your AntiVirus now.
.
