PayPal Paying N.Y. $150,000 in Penalties

ALBANY, N.Y. - The nation's largest online payment service, PayPal, is paying New York $150,000 in penalties after misrepresenting to consumers its policy on repayment when merchandise doesn't arrive, the state attorney general said Monday.

Alec Scott Papierniak, 20, of Mankato, Minn., has pleaded guilty in federal court in San Jose to wire fraud related to what prosecutors call his hijacking of PayPal accounts on the Internet.

After releasing a new version of the Mimail e-mail worm last week, virus authors are using a new tool to help it spread: spam e-mail containing a Trojan horse program that, once installed, retrieves and installs the worm.

Yet another version of the Mimail virus is on the loose, but this one has a twist: it poses as an e-mail from PayPal and attempts to trick recipients into surrendering their credit card data.
