McAfee Antivirus Tool Blocks Internet Access
By Dennis Fisher
Some Network Associates Inc. customers are up in arms over an update for one of the company's antivirus products that is preventing them from accessing the Internet.
The problem is caused by an update for McAfee VirusScan Professional 7.0, the company's flagship enterprise antivirus application. When update 7.03 is installed on some machines running Windows 2000 or Windows XP, it prevents the PCs from connecting to the Internet after the suggested reboot. The problem seems to be affecting customers who upgraded from 7.02 to 7.03.
McAfee has pulled the update from its download servers and is performing quality checks on it, according to information on the company's Web site, but has not provided customers with any instructions on how to fix affected machines.

- Several vulnerabilities in Half-Life -
Oxygen3 24h-365d, by Panda Software (http://www.pandasoftware.com)
Madrid, August 4, 2003 - Security Corporation has reported several security
bugs that affect both the server to which players of 1.1.1.0 and previous
versions of the game connect, as well as clients themselves. MODs(*) based
on the game, such as Counter-Strike, are also affected.
These vulnerabilities, which could be exploited remotely, stem from a buffer
overflow which could lead to a denial of service. In some cases this will
prevent users connected to Half-Life from playing the game, and in other
cases it will allow an attacker to run code of their choice both on the
servers and the clients.
Half-Life has become, in the last few years, one of the most popular games
among fans of multi-player applications. The flaws detected in this game
pose a threat not only to corporate environments, but also to home users and
networks such as those found in cyber-cafés.

Anonymous writes "Screensaver crashing gains desktop
A REPORT on a board claimed there's a way to circumvent security on the machines running the latest version of Mac OSX, by crashing a locked screensaver and recovering the desktop.
According to the filing, if you leave a key pressed for five minutes or more and then press the Return key, that crashes the screensaver and gives you access to the desktop.
The person who filed the report claimed that he's notified Apple of the hole but hasn't had a reply from the firm.
You can find the filing here.

Eudora, developed and distributed by Qualcomm, is a Mail User Agent running on Windows 95/98/2000/ME/NT 4.0 and MacOS 8.1 or later. A remote user can create a DoS attack by sending a file with an exceptionally long name. This does not cause an exploitable buffer overflow but crashes the program. In addition, the mailbox will be corrupted and cause the program to crash every time.
