Rolling Eyes have been receiving an error message for quite a while saying: "cannot update file" sitting behind the benign summary box. this am i went looking to see how to delete the 4k+ listings and got the following error messsage:

exception applying hosts file changes: cannot create file
c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS

i am guesing that the "cannot update file" applies to this exception but don't understand why the exception showed up today and not previously. also does anyone know what, why and how to fix this problem.

also how can i delete all the listings and start fresh.

Quote:
c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS

Right click on the file and ensure that Read only is not selected.

You may have installed, updated or run another third party software that re checked 'read only'

Benign needs to write to the hosts file.

thanx hamish...i did as suggested and unchecked "read only" for all contents of
c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS. i have not gotten the "exception" message again [exception applying hosts file changes: cannot create file c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS] but i still got the "can't update file" error message. there is no identifying name to indicate what program it is referring to. it's a stumper...

any additional ideas!!!
