Note especially these two quotes from that article:

"The introduction of new services that did not support a back door for police would be outlawed, and companies would be given 15 months to make sure that existing services comply."

"Under the FBI's proposal, Internet companies would bear "sole financial responsibility for development and implementation of CALEA solutions" but would be authorized to raise prices to cover their costs."

Even better - the A.C.L.U. has jumped in on this one and if you'll go to this page:

and put in your zip code at the bottom, you'll get a list of all your representatives that the message can be FAXED to (make sure you choose the FAX option buttons) and it'll also fax it to Michael Powell (the FCC Chairman)!

This is pretty disturbing, due to the fact that companies are already "complying" with something that hasn't even been passed yet.

Selected quotes from this article:

All the more reason to get involved by going HERE: http://www.aclu.org/Privacy/Privacy.cfm?ID=15264&c=39 and letting your reps and Michael Powell (Chairman of the FCC) know how you feel about this, if you haven't already done so.
