I admit not having paid attention to TrojanHunter for a while but I now notice that TrojanHunter Guard (process THGuard.exe) is spiking my computer's CPU usage to about 30% (dual 1MHz PIII) every 10 sec. What's up with that?

BTW, I notice there's no icon in the system tray thus no GUI is accessable. When I initiate TrojanHunter Guard via the Start menu, an icon does appear at the system tray and a second THGuard.exe process starts but when I click on the icon, it diappears. Confused

I'm way past my 30 day evaluation period having neglected to properly evaluate the program it seems. Embarassed If I can get some assurance that the TrojanHunter Guard operation as I describe it above is due to the 30 day trial expiry, I'll purchase my license. The program did prove useful when I first installed it to get rid of some trojans.

Hi Ikeb,

Which version of TH are you using?

The CPU spike suggests an older version, Magnus has put in a lot of work reducing this in more recent versions. I would also think that the absence of a systray icon probably IS related to your trial period having expired. If you can specify the version of TH, that would help. Also, remember that upgrades to a later version are free to registered users.

Dunno about that. Maxqnz seems quite intimidating.... Wink

I "evaluated" version 3.7.

Oh, and that's a dual 1GHz PIII. So I slipped a few decimal points... Shocked

Well, if I'm that intimidating, you better listen to me when I tell you that you should pay Magnus the money and upgrade to 3.85! Very Happy

Seriously, the support for registered users is outstanding, as claire, Jamming Ian and others here can testify, and if Jamming and I agree on ANYTHING, it must be true.

If I may ... I asked if the symptoms I'm experiencing are due to the expired evaluation and I haven't had a clear answer to that.

Ahem. You mentioned two major problems: No systray icon, which I said probably IS a sympton of your trial having expired, and the CPU spike which I said was a feature of older versions that has been much improved on in more recent versions. I addressed both those issues in my first response, what did I miss?

At the risk of having that mask put a hex on me ... I feel that there is some clarity missing based on two key words in your response -- "probably" and "older versions". You did ask me what version I have but after I told you, you haven't given me any confirmation that the two key words could be replaced with others giving me better certainty that the symptoms are indeed due to the expired version currently installed.

Well, I could only say "probably" because I've never had an expired trial version on my PC, nor ever expeienced the situation you tentatively linked to the expired version. So, the connection you made seems fair, but I couldn't be authoritative. As to "older versions", when I made that post, I did not know what specific version you were using. What I do know, as one of TH's beta-testers, is that reducing the CPU spikes was a real focus of Magnus' efforts, that all the beta-testers put each new version through its paces to help sort the problem, and that the 3.8 series does not seem to have the same problem. I was not definitive in stating that, though, because certain combinations of OS and other software can still cause conflicts with the Guard. These are uncommon, and I haven't read any reports of spiking issues with the latest Guard.

With any luck, this reply may have been a bit more useful for you. Smile

Well it seems something put the hex on my system, 'cause I just noticed that the THGuard icon isn't showing in my system tray again, but THGuard.exe is a running process (as expected, since I had ticked the "Load at Startup" checkbox). Yes I did upgrade to 3.85. And no I this isn't an XP system, it's Win2K AS. All my other icons show up so what's up with this? How do I control TH without the icon?

Edit: I tried starting TH Guard from the Start menu and I don't get the "Another THGuard instance is already running" error msg. Instead the THGuard icon shows up at the system tray. So what's going on here? Was I running without THGuard being active? I haven't been watching for this icon but come to think of it I haven't noticed it being there in the last while....
