Not wanting to make a decision yet whilst I read the replies, I feel I must relay the fact that when wilders and bbr are compared together, only wilders truly stands on its own merits for being a security forum. bbr has been and is a portal centered on broadband.

Clearly, if one has been a member for a long time at bbr, one knows the ins and outs of the site. There are so many forums available there that in no way shape or form cover only broadband topics. And surfers argue in each and every one of them. At that point it belongs the hosts job to set threads aright. I don't see the delta between bbr's charter and list of offerings versus CCSP's.

bbr offers broadband primarily, with forums that break into so many non-broadband topics.

ccsp offers security with forums that also break into many other non-security topics.

What does homeland security mean to me? I originally equated it in my mind to acts of terrorism against the United States. They may include topics of dicussion surrounding 9/11, or DDoS attacks on government servers. Or they may include the evolvment of the homeland security office.

But these ideas form only as a spark or are a precursor to what hopefully may provide a constructive backdrop for surfer participation.

The idea behind CCSP is not to allow flames, but to enable the idea of surfers having the freedom to post what they want. You'll find that at bbr, but only to an extent depending on which forum one is posting.

Wilders is truly a successful security forum in that almost all the topics cover computer security.

CCSP is not a set of forums, but a portal. Looking at CCSP as a whole one will notice that the majority of offerings are security related while maintaining balance with other facets of life.

Prior to expanding the forums this place was kind of dead. There wasn't an incentive to come to yet another all topic security based forum. Branching out has seen its rise in participation, but nothing stellar.

So, the question remains.. if I am to model CCSP after BBR, then keeping non-computer security forums becomes valid.

Also at this point in time, I don't have a decision to go either way. However, I do like the argument for simplification. After initial expansion of the forums, there was a round of simplification before.

Finally, if simplification is a viable solution right now, folks what do you suggest be the forum lineup?

Merge rather that delete. For example I see no harm at all in merging this subforum with the Politics subforum since any issue RE Homeland Security is inherently political in nature.

Use page views per quarter as your measure of popularity of a subforum. Just because a subforum isn't seeing a lot of participation doesn't mean the users aren't interested and when it comes to political issues and Homeland Security inparticular, a lot of users may be afraid to express their opinion. After Bush saying "If you are not with us you are with the terrorists" and Ashcroft painting all desenters as treasonous, who wouldn't think twice about expressing an opinion pro or con?

As I said before some folks on the right don't want Homeland Security issues to be discussed or mentioned at all. Consider this, that there are many subfora here which are OT with regard to computer security but this is the one which was attacked. That speaks volumes.

My suggestion of combining groups down to 8 would be like this:

1) General CCSP Site

2) General Security
(combining all except Homeland)

3) General Privacy

4) General Software/Hardware
(including Distributed Computing)

5) Proxomitron

6) Mailwasher

7) Software Updates
(combining all will eliminate lots of unnecessary clicks)

8 ) Donut Shop
(combining all Entertainment and Sports topics, with Homeland Security since Politics is already placed here)

Or possibly adding....

9) Politics
(including Homeland Security)

10) Hardware

I tend to agree that some merging shall take place. I propose making the change around the turn of the year.

Paul , this is without question one of the best forums around . The variety of topics is what makes this place so great . Although I read most of what's written here , I usually let it in one ear and out the other . We all have our own ideas and prejudices and fortunately we can express them . When I feel like reading about pc's and security I stay focused on those forums . When I am seeking some pleasure and relaxation , I may drop in at the Tavern and have a beer or better yet , a good single malt scotch ; tell a joke or give a boost to a friend who may be need some one to talk to . Don't change a thing . Computer Cops is like home ; familiar and comfortable ; where you can read what you want and have some fun at the same time . If the place pisses somebody off then they should go elsewhere .Regards , Ralph

Hi bellgamin,
Welcome to the Computer Cops Forum if no one has done this to date.
You and I know each other..I am primrose over that the Wilders forum.
Together you and I have had some wonderful IM's together and your site is truely a Blessing and you are a fine human being whom I respect very much. I also know all these people here, some of them personally and we chat on the phone.

We live in troubled times my friend....life is not simple anymore..nothing seems to be cut and dry and this site the Zhen has put together and the people that help to make it all happen has been an Oasis for everyone to come together and just let their hair down at times and express opinions and feeling they have at the monent just like you have done. I think that is wonderful. Each one of us would help the other in a flash if we could with security and system problems with a combined wealth of information.

I am not going to talk to you about HomeLand Security or what some people post in this section...much less tell you what it should or should not be on the guidelines. I can only tell you that everyone who has posted here has done it for a reason that they felt was important enough to THEM that everyone else could benefit.

I think they all do it very well...just like they do it at Wilders. Please continue posting here at this site and in any category you wish.. you will find many friends..you should never consider all others then as enemies they are not posting to make you such....or me.

John

If I may add my 2 cents. I like the structure of this forum as compared to BBR's more open or general approach. The format here allows me to look specifically at the area I am interested in. That being said I have to agree with JackBenny's suggestion about the reorganization.

If one wants to discuss Homeland Security one must be ready for a political discussion, at least partially. This is a political issue, like it or not. When the issue of limiting or monitoring freedoms is raised politics always comes into play. Remember, right or wrong the individuals making these decisions are politicians.

Paul.... can't say thanks enough for your efforts on the site it has been an invaluable resource

I found this forum through an article from an snippet in Gnome News today.

I think that this forum is a must for people like me who know very little of Internet security and want to simply protect their PCs from harmful intent.

Personally, I think that opinions can be expressed without the need to demean or cause hurt. What has been done here is I think exceptional, when so many people can't be bothered to even try.

God Bless you all. I can't hold a candle to any of yous, so I take my hat off to you all.

Thanks for a great forum.

Thanks for coming by BM - United Kingdom we hope that you will join our little group if you haven't all ready. Remember security is a process and awareness of the issues that might affect your computer use. Much Security is common sense once you are aware of the problem, but please consider that even so called experts are learning new things everyday, we welcome you to this center for learning.

crop circles are probably signals to the vulcans that need to be monitored very closely.
