Hi folks,

I recently ran AdAware (3/25 reference file) on my W2k laptop and came up with the following:

Vendor:Windows
Category:Vulnerability
Object Type:RegData
Size:-
Location:SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon "Shell" ()
Last Activity:3-27-2004
Risk LevelLow
Comment:Shell Possibly Compromised
Description:General Windows Security Issue.Your system security may be compromised.

So I ran Windows Update, installed the latest security updates and ran AAW again. I still get the same issue. Any ideas what this is? Should I go ahead and let AAW remove it?

TIA,
andy

May we have a look please...

Download 'Hijack This!'. http://www.computercops.biz/downloads-file-328.html
Unzip to a folder of its own, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".
When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, then Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents here. Most of what
it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet
.

Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting fix checked.Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

F0 - system.ini: Shell=C:\WINNT\Explorer.Exe,

Thanks. Followed the instructions you gave but the offending item still showed up in the AdAware scan, so I went ahead and let AdAware fix it. Now it's gone.

The other items you noticed are not a problem. They are management tools installed by Everdream, a company that provides PC management services.

andy ~ Apr 4, I came up with the same Adaware result which brought me to this Forum. In my continuing investigation, I went to the Registry to view this entry.

In my case, I had a custom entry there . . .
explorer_new.exe

This was an entry that allowed me to Customize my 'Start' button. I therefore put this entry on Adaware 'Ignore list'.

Here is sight re Start button,
