I am new to Proxo and have just got the beta ZX update config files. There was no readme accompanying it as to how to install it. So how does one install it?????

Sorry if this too basic.

Hello gt and welcome to CCSP. Yes Proxo does have quite a steep learning curve doesn't it? I shall do my best to walk you through this blocklist addition.

First thing is to download the ZXAdList then place the following listed blockfiles found within the zip file within the Proxo/Lists directory.

- ZXAdlist.txt - AdPathList.txt - AdDomainList.txt

- URL Killfile.txt - AdHostList.txt

If you have made any changes to the URL killfile, then back them up that you may copy them to the new list.

Now within the Proxo help section there is a description which covers this information and it can be found in the Proxo/Help/BlockList_Creation.html folder. I would advise that you give this a good go over before moving on. Then read the URL Killfile instructions as they are found within the URL Killfile blockfile.

This Screenshot shows the location where we shall now add the new blocklists that Proxomitron can now recognize them.

To get there:
  • Left click on the Proxo icon which is found within the system tray

  • Go to Config, then Blockfile

  • Click on Add then choose your blocklist files from the box that now appears. This shall now show that Proxo had found the blocklist.

  • Next give the first blocklist a name and enter it in the List Name column.

The names I have chosen are as follows:

- AdList
- AdDomains
- AdPaths
- AdHosts
- ZXList

Click okay then reload Proxo, and give it a test run.
I would suggest that you just direct your browser to a few of the list URLs which are now found within the AdHosts blocklist.

Hi cj - with a nod to ZX and to Scotty;

I'm new to all this, thanks for this site and for the Proxo.

Before tackling my 'questions' I have suggested a number of 'answers' at the bottom of this post. A response may be as simple as saying 'do number 3 you idiot...'

The general Questions;

On a simple level, my questions are a result of confusion between blockfile 'lists' and the 'nicknames' given to various lists then loaded in Proxo.

By 'lists' I mean the actual file name in the directory (for example AllowCookies.txt or any '* list.txt') and by 'nickname' I mean the name attributed to that 'list' in configuration in Proxo interface (ie 'CookieList')

On a more complex level, I think that there are duplicate 'lists' within the default Proxo lists, and the ZX lists, and query whether to overwrite the 'lists' or to combine them?

Finally, there are a great number of 'lists', I count 20 in the ZX Beta 2.5, and it is not clear to me at all whether the suggestion is that I should configure all 20 with 'nicknames' to gain some functionality, or only a handful, perhaps replacing some of Scotty's default configured lists...?

That may not be clear at all.

Another approach - The default Proxo 4.3 set-up has 7 lists in the Lists folder (including esoteric ones like MIME Fix List.txt) and 4 of those are nicknamed in the default config (ByPass, AdList, NoImage, CookieList). My problem is that I am not clear as to whether the 'unused' 3 lists are doing something (being accessed by the filters?) or are waiting for me to do something with them?

Taking another tack - the ZX Beta 2.5 and the Upgraded AdList by ZX contain many more lists (I count the Beta 2.5 at 20) and I have to assume that only a small number of those are 'configured and nicknamed' as Blocklists?

Alternately, would all 20 lists be configured and nicknamed as blocklists, which can then be easily edited in the Proxo U.I?

Possible Answers:

1. Use Scottys 4.3 defaults and leave it at that, its working well and you are clearly baffled by the added functionality of ZXs additions... Wink

2. Backup Scottys default lists, then load ZX's Beta 2.5 into the Proxo lists folder, overwriting those of the same file name, and leave the Proxos default use of those lists (the 4 being ByPass, AdList, ByPass, CookieList) alone... Wink

3. All 20 of ZXs 2.5 Beta lists will be, or should be, loaded automatically, and you choose whether to 'nickname' all of them. If you do not Nickname them then they do nothing.

There are, of course, a lot of combinations of the above, but I will catch the drift if any of these are on the right track...

Sorry this is long. If I can figure how I want to config Proxo, I have another question for you about the interplay with the Hosts file and whether I still need a big Hosts file for protocols other than http...?

Thanks

dmc

I haven't seen Scott's new 4.3 filters yet.

What you could try to do is install two individual Proxo folders and run some tests by running each Proxo exclusively.

Right, if you load my default.cfg file, all the nicknames are already in place.

Looks like you're well on your way. As for the hosts file, it will block traffic to any port via any protocol really based on the IP you want blocked. Proxo takes the hosts file and makes it run much more efficiently, but only blocks it for http and https connections.

But really, those sites that are blocked due to web ads, etc. I haven't seen anything where the hosts file is required.

Thanks Paul / Zhen Xjell for the Welcome, the quick and comprehensive reply and for correcting my assumption of 'Scotty'.....

So thanks also to Scott as author and Proxomitron Mod...

It'll take a bit to digest the suggestions, but I think the key information may be 'door number three' - Not only the 'lists', but 'lists' plus the accompanying 'default config file'...

Thanks again

One thing is certain, you started on a path from which you may never recover. Wink
