|
|
I have b9 set to rename attachments and this works as attachments are renamed with a .b9 extension to test this i mailed myself a .exe attachment b9 renamed it to .exe.b9 which is good but when i click on the attachment it still runs I thought that the purpose of this was to prevent attachments running or what is the purpose of renaming it.
why bother renaming it if it still runs as people who are using the pc with no experience have no clue what .exe.b9 means they still just click and it runs???
am i doing something wrong

Benign will rename the file. i.e. filename.exe will be renamed filename.exe.b9
You can save this file to anywhere on your computer.
The file will saved as filename.exe.b9
When you open filename.exe.b9. Warnings come up and say 'This file may be dangerous. Are you sure you wish to open it?'
If you answer 'Yes' then Benign will place them in a temporary directory called C:\Windows\Temp\B9_protected while the correct application to open is used. The files will remain in the B9_protected directory until your computer is rebooted.
If you are an inexperienced user and you do execute the attachment your anti virus (should) will jump in. Think of Benign as a first level of defense.
Or if you are a bit computer green like, my folks, then you can block the all exe etc type files. Benign Medium default profile will also block by default.
In Benign click Tools>>Options>>Security profiles>>Message and click on the file extension you want to alter and check Block.
I have my Mom and Dads Benign set on Benign Medium default profile so that all exe/pif/com/bat are blocked.
Now why do this -
1.They do not understand how to run these attachments and they are usually jokes or viruses.
2.They have a slow modem and these joke exe/pif/com/bat type files take ages to download and my Mom gets frustrated.
They still get docs and other non-executable attachments like Word, Excel, and pictures etc with no problem. Also this is safer, from a virus protection, point of view. They have never had a virus since installing Benign and are happy (They do not even know that they have Benign running ) and saves me having to clean up their computer) . A case of ignorance is bliss.
Remember that Benign is very configurable. You can create a new Benign Security Profile set up for a specific domain or email address. Have a look at http://www.computercops.biz/postt4738.html
Cheers
