|
|
Intermittently, when using either MailWasher Pro 4 or Internet Explorer 6 SP1, I get the following error message (from Windows, I think):
Vsmon has caused an error in VSMON.EXE.
Vsmon will now close.
If you continue experiencing problems, restart your computer.
The TrueVector Monitor Service is then shut-down, since ZAP detects this, and prompts me to re-start it.
I am using Windows ME. Is there some intermittent compatibility problem with Windows ME? This seems to happen only on one day every now-and-then, but the error occurs repeatedly on the particular day, which is strange, but then settles down some time afterwards.
Error message is attached (JPEG format).
Also, when Internet Explorer is connecting to the Internet, ZAP incorrectly states that 'Windows Explorer' is connecting to the Internet.

Try excluding the Zone Alarm directory from virus scans and any other resident scanning software you are running. Zone alarm really doesn't like being scanned and I've found this to be a good fix for Truevector and Vsmon crashes.

I'm not running any AV/Scanning software at all. What else might cause such TrueVector/VSMON.EXE crashes?

Run that by me again...? You're not using any anti virus software ? Possibly its time to install some, a huge number of viruses target zonealarm executables, until you've removed this possibility any further theorising is rather pointless!

I've just done an AV-scan on my PC and I don't have any virus (I had to stop ZAP in order to do a Trend Micro HouseCall, otherwise the on-line engine wouldn't work - I shouldn't have to stop ZAP). So, I guess there must be some strange programming fault in VSMON.EXE that is causing these intermittent (but rare) crashes - a program shouldn't crash, it should give an error message!
Hopefully the VSMON.EXE in the up-and-coming V5.0 of ZAP is more stable. This has only started hapenning in the latest couple of versions of ZAP, but did not happen in ZA Free.

Have you tried doing a clean install of ZA?

Whenever I upgrade, I always un-install my current version, by using the Add/Remove Programs in Windows, then I install the updated version. Is this not classified as a clean installation? I not, then where can I find instructions for doing a clean installation of ZA?

First make a backup of your settings in ZAP and then go into the start menu and the zonelabs entry and right click on the uninstaller and select properties. Now in the target box you need to add a space and then /clean to the end so that it looks something like this "C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe" /clean then click apply and then OK. open ZA and turn off the load on boot option, then reboot and then run the uninstaller (the one you change the shortcut for) This will get rid of ZA for you.Now go to your windows temp folder and delete everything, then find the folder named Internet logs and delete it then empty your recycle bin. ZA should be gone. Now reboot your computer and reinstall ZAP and if it asks, do a clean install. Now try out the new install and see if it works OK. If it does, restore your settings, wait 2 minutes then reboot. Make sure it still working (or not)
