Hello chums,

For some time now I've been bashing my head against a wall trying to get AVG7 working with MS Outlook XP. AVG will auto-update ok and finds Eicar with no problem. It just won't play ball with Outlook. I've tried everything I can think of, but AVG still stubbornly refuses to check my email and won't append the confidence message to in/out traffic in Outlook.

Note that, in addition to AVG, I'm also running the following email-related security apps.
Mailwasher Pro
Firetrust Benign

I've got a feeling that it's just a simple(?) matter of specifying which port AVG should be using, but whenever I try to add B9's port to AVG's config, the setting isn't saved. The FAQs on either AVG or B9's sites don't seem to cover this particular problem, despite me having done a considerable amount of that unpleasant 'reading' stuff.

Consequently, I have now torn out most of my hair and started on my armpits. Could some kind soul possibly walk me through the procedure necessary to get AVG doing what I paid it to do, please? A guide in the form of "Tick this; Disable that" etc., would be absolutely brilliant, although I do appreciate that most other people have a life.

Thanks in exasperation,

Rod

AVG 7 works with most email clients such as, Opera, Tunderbird, etc...

Directions for Outlooks:
Open Outlook then do the following, form the menu options. Tools>"Email Accounts"> select "Change Existing"> click "next" > Highlight the email account >click "change".

Inside the email settings you should have the following.

Your Name: your name here
Email Address: your email address
Incoming Mail sever(POP3): 127.0.01
Outgoing Sever(SMTP): pop.YourISP.com
Username: YourUserNameHere/pop.YourISP.com
Password: YourPassword

Now click the "More Settings" button. select the "Advanced" tab and make sure the incoming sever port is "5200" and the outgoing should be "25".

That's it. The setup should be the same for all other clients as well

Thanks for your assistance, Namor. Before I go ahead with the method you describe, are you able to assure me that it won't interfere with B9's settings, please?

Kind regards,

Rod

I can't promise that. I have never used B9 nor do I know what ports and junk it uses. Sorry... Maybe you could post my set-up suggestion in the Benign threads and ask about conflicts..... Wish I could be of more help.

That setup is for AVG 6.0 FREE only, not AVG 7.0 Pro. AVG 6.o didn't have an Outlook plugin like 7.0 does so that setup was necessary. Smile

Rodders I would put money on one of the other apps causing the problem. I install AVG 6 & 7 daily and have never had a problem with email scanning. When you install AVG 7 make sure you check the Outlook plugin option and it will scan your emails just fine. Try uninstalling B9 and see if that fixes it.

Cool

Thanks mnosteele,

I've already done the 'software shuffle' a few times now and still feel that the solution is down to correctly configuring AVG7, although I may be wrong - I usually am.

Uninstalling Firetrust Benign just to get AVG working isn't really an option for me, as it's more likely to trap 'n zap virii than many of the more orthodox anti-virus apps that I've used.

If it wasn't for the rubber walls in here, I'd have concussion by now. Wink
