Evil or Very Mad

Runnng Norton Internet Security 2004 on a Window's 98 laptop.

When I installed the program it did not allow me to register or ask me for the key code. When Windows starts, the Norton symbol in the system tray has an X on it and is disabled. The program would not open from the desk top, system tray or program menu.

I tried to uninstall it but that failed and wound up causing problems with the Microsof Installer. I tried fixing that without success, and wound up wiping the hard drive.

When I installed again after wiping the hard drive, I was able to input the key code, but still could not register and the program will not load or open. Again you cannot open the program.

There was problems with Adware on the computer and I used Spybot, Adaware and CWshredder to deal with them.

Any suggestions as to what is going on here?

I had problems installing NIS 2004 when I first got it, although I think it may have been for other reasons. I have heard some recommendations to stick with earlier versions for pre-2000 OS but this does not mean that NIS 2004 should not work on a 98 machine.

When you wipe your hard drive you are doing a full format? I did this with my systems and then prioritised NIS as the first program to load back on afterwards ... only when I had completed installation did I then start loading everything else on.

What is the status of your internet connection? ... I believe NIS comes with a built in function to stop working beyond a certain point if you have not successfully registered ... make sure that your Internet connection is functioning in order to complete registration.

First question: Is this Win 98 or Win 98 Second Edition?

Another possibility for your consideration: You don't say what sort of firewall, anti-virus, or anti-trojan software you were running prior to attempting to install NIS 2004. That suggests to me at least the possibility that you might already have had something on your box that deliberately disables NIS/NPF -- and that in your case, it did so during the installation process.

The only way I can think of to examine that possibility is to use one of the online scanners (which is an extraordinarily slow way to do this, but it may be all that's available to you). Again, I'm talking about an online AV/AT scanner service here, not a port scanner.

Well, a bit late for that approach then. Sad

What were these 'problems' that SpyBot Adaware and CWShredder dealt with?

I suspect that initially you had some malware on your box when you tried to install NIS 2004 that shut it down. As to what happened after wiping the hard drive, reinstalling the OS (from an original CD, I hope?) I think you may have then been hit with something else. OR . . . did you have AdAware, SpyBot, and CWShredder on a CD that you then used offline before re-connecting to the Internet? (You can get compromised in anywhere from the first 15 seconds to the first minute if you access the Internet without a pre-installed firewall (or NAT router) and no memory-resident AV/AT software running these days.)
